I'm eagerly awaiting a Gradius 5 backlash next year, causing Ikaruga to place #1, followed by an Ikaruga backlash the year after that. :P

I voted it the same as I did last year, so yeah, what the hell happened.

Not to mention GigaWing beating it. Big time what the fuck right there.

Kamui just edging Gun Frontier is alright. Would've been nice to see it beat out any of the Rays though.

There's a shorter answer to why it's not as good as GV.
Hmm, I guess I was just never a Gradius fan. The PSX one did look interesting, though, as well as some of the spin-offs. I really don't understand why people like GV I guess. It just seems like a very slick, technoized, and padded-out sequel to me-- lots of slow boring Cores and cutscenes. Meanwhile, I've been getting into Metal Black lately :D

I would have placed Shikigami no Shiro 3 / Castle Shikigami 3 in my top 5 if I had of played it before the polls closed.

Where was Battle Garegga in 2004? Every other year it's in the top ten. Huh.

Gradius V is totally not as good as Radiant Silvergun.

Looking again at the full list I'm fairly surprised the original Gradius didn't get higher with GV being so popular.

I'd have loved to have seen an Honerable Mention to that. Even just a wink or a tip of the hat...

Yeah, this is something I had to think a lot about when voting, too ... Am I voting for the most important games, the most original, the most historically influential, or simply the best overall?
Gradius is by far my favourite hori series, and if I could vote for my top 50 shmups, they'd all probably fit in there. But singling out only 25 titles is difficult and I just couldn't justify including the original, when I thought that several of the sequels had improved on it. I love the feel of the original and it's probably my most played Gradius of all, but I just didn't have room to vote for more than two Gradius games. In the end I voted for what I thought were the best overall, not necessarily the most 'historically important' or influential.

Treasure fans and other people who like "epic" games.

Probably because the original Gradius is kind of worse than Gradius II GnY (on the HM list), Gradius III (which would have been on the HM list if they didn't break it into AC and SNES versions), or Gaiden, which even made it into the top-25. While it was the game that started the series, it hardly had anything to offer compared to the later installments, imo. Hence the reason it was rated lower than most of the other Gradius games out there.

Interesting responses, and certainly good arguments. Herr Schatten is of course right to bring up the Treasure distinction.

Personally I love the first Gradius more than all of them aside from GV, though all of them are fairly close in quality for me...

I kind of like those results :] To hell with Cave though !

Gradius V and Ikaruga placings are easily explained - they were mainsteam releases and a large number of people would have found the genre that way and in turn, found this site.

Obviously few people have played Ketsui still...

It will be very interesting to see the next year's top-25, which I suppose will include Ketsui thanks to the X360 port, and likely have DOJ's popularity increased even more thanks to the other port. We need more arcade-only games' ports. :(

Hopefully Ikaruga is never #1. Next year I expect DDP to be back in first, where it belongs. I'm glad to see ESPGaluda so high, it might be the most fun game ever. I also need to see M.U.S.H.A. back on the list, seeing that it's the only shooter I 1-credited..

I never thought I would see the day when DDP wasn't number one. Losing out to Garegga, DOJ, and Ikaruga, no less.

I didn't vote this year. By the time I noticed the poll had started, the poll had closed.

next year's top 10 will be the same titles, except mushihimesama and guwange. can we agree now that treasure, cave, and raizing make the best games?

i also like how nobody responded to twiddle's limp flame bait

No, I guess we can agree that they make the most popular at this moment, though.

Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...

Ray Force being in the top 25 pleases me somehow, I don't play it much but I am still pleased.

Will Radiant Silvergun keep dropping? how far will it fall?

Talk about time dilation. I thought this was the first annual top 25... :|

Mmm..that doesn't really ring true. DDP and Battle Garregga, for instance, are both available for FREE in MAME. So, I don't think it's a matter of GV just being played by more people.

Crisium wrote:I still have to play many of these on the list. Time to get cracking. Or it would be, but I'm having too much fun with Galactic Attack (RayForce) on my Saturn. I can't even finish a playthrough yet, even with the 4 credits, but that's more motivation to play. It's a unique game with the layers and I would have liked it in top 10. Oh well.

And I guess no one shares my love for Chaos Field. Even if it is bosses only.
Layer Section is great. I was just playing that a while back, and made it to the last stage with the 4 credits. That's sad and all, but it's the best i've done. That game is hard.
