"it's just because" makes no sense to me. All the same is true of Ikaruga as well-- indeed Ikaruga is even more readily available and for less. But it's not in first. first question: how many of the voters do you think even consider a game's scoring system before including it in their list...?
don't take this as an argument against the game's quality (gradius v was at the top of my list), but i voted for the game
despite being epic (too long), and survival-based (no decent scoring system). i think you're right on the eye candy though. statistics like the top 25 shmups are slightly meaning less, but thanks to whoever did the number crunching. hopefully next year we can get technosoft completely off the chart altogether

Gradius V is simple, easy to get into and pretty. It's fun, and harks back to the days of 'classic shooters', so it has the retro gamer's votes. The fact that it's my girlfriend's favourite shooter underlines exactly why it's at number one when put to a vote. It's the populist choice. Guess we're not quite as hardcore as we like to think we are, eh?

Yeah, I'm not as hardcore as I'd like to be (what I need is more time, skills, etc.). Gradius V is toward the bottom of my 25 because it's a hori and I like shorter levels/games. Still, I have nothing against its no. 1 status. I doubt it will last beyond this year, so those who are annoyed won't be annoyed for too long.

Gradius 5 is likely to stay near no.1, unless someone else puts a tit-for-tat counter weighting vote of ~ 25:1 exclusively for one of its nearest rivals (like it was done against DDP this year with G5); and kinda goes against the guidelines for voting, i.e.:
from rules wrote: 02) For each shmup, allocate an integer number of points in the range from 1 to 25. The points you assign will help compensate for, say, games that fewer people vote for but feel much more strongly about than others they vote for.
I know I did this for Stargate, but it's an obscure game form '81 that "fewer" people vote for (all 3 of us!); hence the weighting as I have very strong views on it...
Gradius 5 getting too 'few' votes in the past is hardly applicable...

Half of the top 10 is Cave. 3 are from Treasure, 2 from Raizing. The top 10 is made of 3 developers, heh.

It has the same sprites and that, sure. But everything that makes it a Raizing game has been changed to make it a Cave game. Though it does have rank and that.

And speaking of Ibara, it's funny how I hated it to death at first and now it's one of the shooters I play the most. I'm really glad to see it made it to the Top 25 this year, even though I didn't vote for it.

My own thoughts:
The bad: Gradius V is a bad number 1, because it's hardly representative for the genre as a whole. Axelay shouldn't even come near a top 100 and has no place on the list. On the other hand, Gunbird 2 should definitely be among the top 25. I don't understand why people like Lords of Thunder more than Gate of Thunder (I blame butt rock), and why people keep voting for Blazing Star.
The good: I'm glad we have R-Type and Strikers 1945 II back in the top 25 and Soldier Blade back in the HM. It's also a good thing that Under Defeat left the top 25.

No game could represent the whole genre, am I correct?

True, but DDP comes quite close because it's practically the only one that appeals to both the new and the oldschool audience. It's also one of the least hated shmups.
