There is a PC freeware shmup called CRUSH STORM that has a one minute Challenge mode. It can be found at shoot-the-core.

Warning Forever has a specified five minute attack mode. Using the Custom option, you can set your own time to play from 10 to 999 seconds.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but a freeware game called Crymson Blade consists of one level. I think it was a techdemo of sorts. It can be found at shoot-the-core.

Again, you may not be looking for this, but the NES game Dragon Spirit - The New Legend has a "short game" which can be accessed by dying at the very first boss (stage 0?). Whether you beat it or die to it, you are returned to the title screen; if you lost, it should say "Gold Dragon" under the logo. It's about 5 stages or so, compared to the 10 or so of the main game (Blue Dragon).

Well Cloudphobia's stages are all 3 minutes, though you can (and should) finish them earlier. (PC Game)

Nice list, P_HAT! Okay, I'll contribute with some of my findings as well:

1. Force Gear and Twinbee Returns do indeed have Time Attack mode (the only available mode) for Tokimeki Memorial for the PC-Engine.

2. Kyokugen for MSX2 has 3 and 5-minute caravan modes.

3. I remember Tyrian 2000 for the PC having a Timed Battle where you pick 1 of 3 stages and have to complete the level within a certain time limit.

4. Zero Master Striker, Star Fighter and Super Star Shooter for the X68000 have Time Attack modes, like Zero Rei.

5. There's a PC doujin freeware shmup called Caravan Star, which, judgin by its name, obviously has Caravan modes =D

6. Another PC doujin that was incomplete is Score Attack Game S.S.S.. I'm currently asking the uploader if he could upload the game again as the links to the original site are dead~

7. 4 Minute Rush!, made using Game Maker.

Not sure this counts but I figured I'd mention it.
Leave Home is always 5 minutes long. The game changes difficulty and adjusts as you play, but I think it always ends at 5 minutes.

Soldier Force by Studio Siesta is a doujin PC game with TONS of caravan modes and stages to choose from. Really awesome.

There's a Wii version for Super Star Shooter also.

DFK's Arrange B is individual stages with a highly modified system with rank that builds across plays. It's very much a different mode.

Sonic Wings Special (Saturn and PSX). Can't remember how exactly it's called there. A boss rush mode with some popcorn inbetween boss battles giving you power-ups. Must be completed in under five minutes (from what I remember).

Reading this article http://hippotrouble.com/2010/03/19/caravan-time/ sounds like Hudson used to organise travelling tournaments, hence the cravan name.

Is that correct?

Namco heli STG Metal Hawk (which just received its home debut via Arcade Archives) is a Time Attack gane through-and-through. All about demolishing Missions in short order to reap massive endstage time multipliers. Current WR (auto on) demonstrates dizzying speed and accuracy. Its tank-based spiritual seek/destroy sibling Assault (another 2022 ACA entry) is much the same; big difference is, you end its Missions by taking out the primary target, rather than hitting your quota.

OP forget about Super Spacefortress Macross II, an underlooked NMK gem. Stages divided to 3 courses (beginner, medium, expert), each stage have 2 minute limit, and it has the same caravan scoring mechanics (kill enemy asap for more enemies, tons of scoring secrets). You must score at certain points to procced to the next stage except for the final stages which if you don't, you'll get a bad end.

It's unlikely this game and the first Macross (developed by NMK as well, and now all of NMK's IP owned by Hamster) would get an ACA release due to licensing hell, but we'll see.

Macross II is the one STG I'd get an ACA release, if asked. Very little else like it that I've played. Feels like NMK's Dragon Blaze, in augmenting their no-nonsense intensity with developed, addictive scoring. I feel similarly about Thunder Dragon 2, but the caravan format puts MII's compulsive "just one more credit" factor through the roof.

Banpresto's Mazinger Z is inbound, and TGM somehow happened, so I'm 1% less skeptical than before.

Most of the games in the Parodius series on consoles have an Omake/Lollipop/Caravan mode. Oshaberi on Saturn has 2 of them - one of them records best times too and is a kind of race game/ shooter hybrid a bit like Kingdom Grand Prix.


Star Soldier on Gamecube has 2 and 5min caravan modes.


Caravan Shooting Collection on SNES/SFC has been mentioned already but it's worth noting that only one of the 3 games in that compilation - Hector '87 - actually has a "proper" caravan mode!!
