well judging by the votes so far it looks unlikely to even make into the top 25

I'd say Gradius V is one of the most sucessfully modernized shooters ever made. But the best Gradius is Gradius Gaiden.

And on topic: Winds/Lords of Thunder does not belong on the top 25 list.

True, and if there was a Top 25 for the best shooter music, it might belong on that list.

I agree on Rob's stance on GV, and I hope it gets on no°1 this time. Last year it was so close.

sorry to break it to the thread patron, but my vote might be coming down. i made the list and i was pretty satisfied with the spread (still have to organize by value but still ).

yesterday though, i was taking a look at it, and i KNOW there are games out there that i enjoy more than this one, i just can't seem to remember what they are and on what format.

Rob: just a thumbnail, imageshack is goofy I'm afraid.

From here it looks like the artist behind the goofy "Johnny Turbo" comic commercial, is that right?

Yeah, here's the full page. Sadly there is only one page dedicated to Lords.

Sengoku Blade is better than Lords of Thunder since the bullets might kill you.

You know... you actually made me stop to think for a second on that one. I was so sure of myself when I made that initial assessment... but it appears I could have been wrong.

Hmmm... lemme' do some thinking and I'll get back to ya. 8)

I agree. I only voted for one of them. :P

Same here, i voted Radiant SilverBum.
looks like Gradius V might not make the top 10 this year.

I just got Cotton 2 a couple weeks ago, and I think it's outstanding even though I am generally not a fan of ultra-cute-themed games. Both that and LOT are proof that you can do a flexible lifebar and not break the game.

Lords of Thunder may have replaced Thunderforce III as my go-to cruise 'em up though. And it's much less of a rip off of that series than Gates of Thunder was!

This pretty much proves that availability = number of votes. A year ago, hardly anyone would have put this game on their top 25 list.

If you honestly think that Lords of Thunder is one of the best 25 shooters ever made then I'm enclined to say that that you don't know enough shoot 'em ups. There are dozens upon dozens of better shmups, and even lots of better ones for PCE: for instance Gate of Thunder, Soldier Blade, Nexzr, 1941, Sylphia, Rayxanber III, Sapphire, Magical Chase, Aldynes...

Hmm, I don't have a Wii, but what did they mess up? Does it look totally smeared?

Call me a sentimental old fuckpiece, but not everyone is basing their list on games currently enjoyed. Mine is a mixture of those I have to thank for sustaining my interest over time, and those I still turn to for thrills. I didn't have access to many cd-rom games for my Duo, back when I was a mere whipper snapper. But Lords will always hold a special place for me, since it enthused me more than many games on other systems of the same period. I played it recently on the VC and it's still very good, if perhaps a little on the easy side. Regardless, it'll certainly remain in my top 25 for 2008, even if that means the exclusion of games I'd rather play on a daily basis. Now if I can only work Tatsujin (MD) into that damn list... :(

People should take back their Nexzr votes after this display.

I don't ask anyone to vote for Nexzr for my sake, but because it deserves it. Unlike Lords of Thunder it's not flash over substance. By not voting for Nexzr you don't punish me, you just deny a great game its rightful place. Will you be able to sleep at night with that on your shmupping conscience?

PS.
Lords of Thunder features an energy bar.

I rest my case.
