Also, another reason why the pod differences are percievably imbalanced:

If you use Fixed pods, the bullets will go faster the longer you keep them.
If you use Smart pods, more bullets will be thrown at you the longer you keep them. Most people can handle this version of the rank than the other kind, so they think this is better.

Yes, Varth is cool. I played it on one of those capcom collections and was instantly pleased by it. I didn't expect it to net #1, tho. Still... V-V = interest perked.

Seems like a fair trade-off, but I'll have to try the smart pods some more. It gets very fast with the fixed pods.

The design decision is hilarious if you understand it, but enemies fire in the same angles enough most of the time as well, which makes the smart pods much better in parts.

ROB

I think you missed one.
I'm pretty sure it says '95 on the title screen, but it's kind of hard to tell.

That's a relief!
You should have taken a shot of the title screen for everyone to enjoy.

I did, but didn't post it. Needed an animated gif. Very psychedelic. :?

Now I guess I'll play Darius Gaiden.

Favorite Varth tactic: accidentally pick up pod, trog along game until max power star appears, suicide, then pick up max power star.

I first played Varth on PSP and thought: wow, this would be cool to play on something other than the PSP. I also thought: this is a drag without autofire. Definitely will check this out in MAME.

You are doing it the other way around. You are supposed to first try something on MAME, and then buy a copy if you enjoy it.

And in any case, are there ANY shooters on PSP that are actually playable?

It´s not likely that he actually (could have...) bought it here...

The top 3 are redeeming choices after Turbo Force (everything that's wrong with Sonic Wings multiplied by 10 and boredom.)

The smart pods in Varth seem worse because it puts part of the control out of your hands. At least you'll know where the fixed pods are going to be.

After the last hour of Varth using smart pods, I really like the smart pods. It makes you dodge as if you might actually get hit from the front. That's cool.

Answer: Definitely not. I use the PSP for puzzle games and platformers only now. Forget playing shmups on it.

Nonsense. I play Gradius Collection on it since days and it´s wonderful. It´s a PSP S&L though, which has a very smooth d-pad (unlike what I heard about the original PSP).
