I'm pretty sure that if Blue Wish can run at 60fps on my ancient laptop, then it'd run on anything. Radio Zonde hardly even works on my computer, so point taken. Awful game anyway (but then again my computer is SHIT). Not all mame games work on the right config, but it just takes 10 minutes to fiddle around. I alternate between 0.66 and 0.99 or whateve the latest is on my computer to get certain games like Gunwange to work at full throttle. Let's all assume that we can run at least mame.b.66 before the championship begins, a line has to be drawn somewhere innit.Icarus wrote:First, there is the issue of compatibility. In last year's tournament, there were players who had problems getting MAME to run, so there is no guarantee that a demo of some doujin will be able to run as well, freeware or not. Nine times out of ten, freeware and demos are unoptimised and buggy. I've had Hitogata Happa refuse to load even though my PC can run the latest commercial PC games. Radio Zonde is slow and jerky. And that's just as an example.Kiken wrote:If it's freeware (like X.X's stuff), why would this even be an issue? And hell, what's wrong with holding a score comp for a demo (like the first 2 levels presented in the Kamui demo)? It's basically the equivalent of a Caravan Mode. Doujin does not have to equal obscure Comiket Product.
Then there are the arcade/console-only players, people who don't touch PC games or emulators at all. Granted, all you'd need to do is get a PC joypad, but at this moment in time, it's still very short-notice to ensure that every possible participant has access to and is capable of running a doujin game.
If you're going to use doujin in this tournament, at least start compiling player data and a possible shortlist a long time before the actual themes and registration threads appear.
Shooting Game Tournament 2007 (Themes/Game Selection Thread)
These are the final themes:
Playing Week #1: Konami Week (20th August - 26th August)
Playing Week #2: Seibu Kaihatsu Week (3rd September - 9th September)
Playing Week #3: '06 2nd Place Week (17th September - 23rd September)
Playing Week #4: Hidden Gem Week (1st October - 7th October)
Playing Week #5: Famous Manic Week (15th Ocotober - 21st October)
-Famous Manic Week will be a mixed developer week, with different shmups from the most respected companies in one poll.
-Skipped the Cute'em Up Week despite some popularity because I think a graphical theme isn't really enough to differ as a seperate week theme. Though there may appear several Cute'em Ups in the polls.
-And passed Doujin Week to stay on the safer side.
-And in case you are worried because one deceloper could win several mixed developer weeks. After winning one poll, there won't be any other games from that developer on the other mixed developer weeks this year to guarantee some variation.

OK,
Section Z - poor
Gunbird 1 - poor
Vasara - mediocre
Progear
Sexy Parodius (should just be in Konami week)
Dimahoo - hell no
Might've seemed like a good idea in theory...
And when the best people can come up with in the first hidden gem week is Air Gallet and Vasara maybe it's time to recycle it.
So there's definitely going to be another cave game. Damn shame we already played the playable one.

We didn't play Dangun Feveron, though nobody voted for that.
Barring the Italian zerg rush (if they do participate this time) we probably might get better taste for second place winners, and if everyone idiot-votes for Raiden I during Seibu Week we get a good game next year.

I repeat, I do not want many people idiot voting Raiden I because "well durr I have the Raiden Project". Viper Phase is much better, trust me.
You might need a somewhat beefy computer (2.0 P4/AXP 2000+) for RF2 and RF Jet with all the filtering options turned off in Direct3D, though.

Hmm... I am not sure but I guess this will be the "bastardized" version. Maybe give us some examples of which games you wouldn't count as manic? Armed Police Batrider for example could still have qualified for this week, if it wasn't excluded by default.GaijinPunch wrote:Week 5: Manic
So can we get some clarification here? Is this a strict danmaku only, or are we going by the usual bastardized English version of the word (eg, anything with bullets is Manic).
Just as a heads up, if you by any chance put Mars Matrix in please note that the Dreamcast version has modified scoring and probably can't be used.

What qualifies as "manic" has always been debated. I've always considered it what's known as danmaku (shitloads of bullets and usually a small hitbox). Any of the Ikead Cave stuff, Gigiwangs, Shikigamis, or Mars Matrix would work here. The Raizing/Psikyo would not.Edge wrote: Hmm... I am not sure but I guess this will be the "bastardized" version. I've got an idea that the mods will most likely not grant, but I should be heard.
Why not a private forum for each team member? Would save us from firing PMs all over the place, and would allow us to have team strategies. The mods can always peak in, but I'm sure we're comfortable w/ the honor system.

I tried to get it changed. Ya shoulda been there.GaijinPunch wrote:Why not a private forum for each team member? Would save us from firing PMs all over the place, and would allow us to have team strategies.
yer point didn't come up in that link tho..
I'm far more interested in seeing Bloodflowers, Malc, Zach, jiji, and incognoscente play this time than asking any mod or admin for anything. All the mod crew deserve to freely participate in somethin' widescale they don't have to babysit or lead into extra work. Call it a fruit of their labor from keeping the forum not a spambot trainwreck so this event can even function.
If they accept your idea on their own, power to us. As of now, nobody's planning to make special requests to the mod team outside maybe a later thread-sticky.
If anybody wants to name-drop a few "free-'n'-easy-to-setup-&-secure" create-a-forum sites, that works too.
-Oorrrrr you could always setup a bunch of private spots for everybody on Gamengai :P

Would forums here be so hard to create? I don't know. It would definitely be more convenient for a tournament on this board to have a little place to talk about it on this very board.DJ Incompetent wrote:-Oorrrrr you could always setup a bunch of private spots for everybody on Gamengai :PGaijinPunch wrote:Why not a private forum for each team member? But, yeah, if that's not going to happen how about one on your board for our team, GP?
Ok, a quick question here......
Seibu Kaihatsu, one of the very few developers Im NOT familiar with.... well, I hadnt realized exactly WHO made the Raiden games, anyway (note to self, pay more attention).
Now, I have a copy of Raiden 3 on the PS2, so that's all good and happy.
But my question is this: what do I do about the MAME roms?
I went and looked up the developer, seeing what they've made and such......
.......and not ONE Rom of a game made by them (of the shmups I've downloaded) ACTUALLY WORKS RIGHT. Not with the MAME that I have, anyway.
I was all excited to try Raiden Fighters, for example (having heard much about it here), but....... gibberish graphics!!!
So my question is really quite simple: is there something Im doing wrong here?
I'll say this, I DONT like MAME. Oh, I USE it, it does it's job..... but what a horrid little program. Terrible interface, just..... blah. Been using it for years, and been ANNOYED by it for years. Now, that's just my opinion, of course, but there it is.
So I dont know much about it beyond the version I use, 0.90, one of the Windows ones.
Is there another version that'll make these work, or something?
Specifically, a version that will let me use my 360 controller, and NOT ignore the D-pad (siiiiiiiigh). Cant play these with the keyboard whatsoever.
Maybe a stupid question, but I figured I'd ask anyway.
