Rob, that link has been in my sig for, like... ages. I thought you knew. Sorry ^_^;

Perfectly understandable. Then again, some of the best games are straight ports, I wonder how you'll fill the next spots in the chart.

There's also a shmup in the Quattro Arcade 4 in 1 cartridge and Halley Wars for the FDS.

I might make room for one in the top 19 and cover the rest after #1. Thanks, any others?

Looking at Turrican's xeno page gave me the far worse idea of doing Game Boy shooters later.

I'm sure you'd love Mercenary Force, The Gradius V of GB shooting.

it is from the guys behind Zombie Nation
Uh oh.

I'll try it if I remember, after the NES fatigue wears off.

19Over Horizon

Slow-moving, very easy side-scroller with front and back fire. A few semi-interesting moments like pushing the ice blocks on stage 3.

In before the lock!

I'd totally do a Game Boy shmups gauntlet... unless Rob called it already

No way, Over Horizon is one of my favorites... if you're gonna keep that score you better give some more reasons why!

Do GB! I'm drained.

OH: Like I said it's slow and it's easy. It reminds me of the most middle of the road 16-bit shooters like Arrow Flash and Phalanx. It could use something extra and not the cute sprite mode. Its moments of inspiration are few and not that great. I like the crab boss battle posted, because of the changing corridors, but the boss is still very weak and adds nothing to the idea.

Compile is afraid of the player having to move the sprite, gives laser 80% screen coverage after a few power-ups.

ImageImage
I guess this is a cute 'em up... in a half-assed sort of way.

ImageImage
Left: Typical Compile eye-assaulting lava stage. Right: Compile subtly reminding you of sleep. Also, 20 bombs.

To be fair Compile was one of the best at graphics and they're pretty nice here. Also to be fair I tried the hardest difficulty setting, but I still don't think they get solid game design. It still has ridiculously designed weapons, just now with dozens of carrots floating around the screen. How about some, just a few, attacks that can't be destroyed with the screen-laser? And no screen-laser.

Note where the ship is in every pic.

Damn, that's another favorite you flunked. I like my easy, relaxing, right-before-bed shmups I guess :(

Not even the ricochet bullet option earns it a few positions? :?

I like the choice of smileys following that post.

There may be another Compile game tomorrow. 8)

Damn, wish I didn't overlook this. Much better alternative to simply increasing the difficulty. Would've easily hit the top 10.

I have been watching this story unfold and now Rob has reached a game (Gun-Nac) that I hold dear to my self. Seeing how his rating go I can now take serious his rankings.

He is give 5/10 to:

Over Horizon -- I never play it but with his ranking and Gun-Nac having same ranking I am feel more excited to play Over Horizon now!

Good show Rob. Much enjoyment I am having watching you play these NES titles

I wonder if Rob's heretofore unkown reason for doing these reviews is to make people cry by giving low scores to games they like? :P

I would do an MSX one

Problem is that the MSX has like 5 times more shmups than the NES :) (probably not close to the PC-Engine though)

I cheat
I only cover USA Turbo Grafx 16
I plan to include the cover art as well in my reviews.

Whats cool is that NEC put genre labels on the games so I will only cover games that are "shooting" games and some shooting games that were catagorized as "arcade" (ie Dragon Spirit, Aero Blasters)

Look forward to reviews of games like:
Veigues Tactical Gladiator and Gunboat.....

So I am screwed if I try to do an MSX one :)

In the Rockwaldo's thread, I had said I'd play every shmup available on MAME, but I must admit playing every MSX shmup is more appaling to me... though I probably will end missing a lot of games because some of them are incredibly obscure.

OOHH, what to do now? I think MSX shmups could use some exposure.

I briefly considered doing something like this for PC Engine (hu-card only, though), but it would take a lot of time and I'm rather busy this summer. Just do PCE :D Why would you do TG16 anyway, there's less games with far crappier cover art.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

This could be very useful, though. Now that so many PCE shmups come out for the VC, a reliable guide would be much appreciated.

It is at that point I want to say 'I told you so'. For what its worth, I admit it is sometimes really hard to go back from the newer shmups to the NES classics.
