There is what?
The majority of attacks are fixed patterns and aimed patterns/bullets. None of that is random. If you move all over the place and play sloppily it might seem like it, but that is not the way it is.
Or as I said, "Cave shooters: just slow enough to where people think they've got crazy twitch dodging skills."

Ibara, Pink Sweets, Galuda 2, Mushi Futari all have random attacks/patterns. Pink Sweets is full of them, and Futari probably has the most of any Ikeda game. Of course Galuda 2's zesshikai mode probably has the most unpredictable bullet patterns in ANY shmup. It seems Cave is putting this more and more into their games to spice things up.
As for slowness, the bullet patterns in Mushi Futari are so fast, it's the only shmup to ever give me migraines (it consistently does this to me now, which is making it hard for me to continue playing it).

Dodonpachi, esprade, guwange all have randomization in enemy attacks too, making it impossible to just remember each hole you're going to go through for each pattern => improvisation.
Those games feature fast bullets as well, but not much. Because a larger number of slow bullets means more reading and dodging skills, whereas fewer faster bullets emphasize on memorizing + reflexes.
So it's more like : "Psikyo shooters: just fast enough to where people think they've got crazy twitch dodging skills." But it's their memory doing half the job ;p

I think all shmups ever made are good
Trek trough the Galaxy on silver wings and play football online.
Actually, it's not the bullet speed that makes me feel like I'm an uber twitch dodger. It's the small hitboxes of both you and the bullets (Mushihimesama is awesome for this effect). Doesn't mean the games are easy though =P Not as difficult as they look, but still not easy.
If you want faster bullets in an amazing Cave game. Play DOJ for score, or just spam hypers every time you get one. You'll get your bullet speed >=)
When I feel like twitch dodging, I'll throw in a Psikyo game and goof around. Much in the same way that if I feel like grazing bullets I'll throw in Castle Shikigami 2 and goof around. But as I said before, Cave games are so much more fun ^_^ Also prettier, with better music, and cooler designs.

There's this polish in the former games that the later just don't seem to have, although it's hard to pinpoint any one contributing factor.
I'd take that comparison of Capcom and SNK with Cave and Raizing first
Sonic R knows Cave made Mushi and Dragon Blaze was by Psykio, what I believe he was saying is that Taito ported them to the PS2. And while many complain about the PS2 Mushi; living in a place with no arcades of a decent calibur and not having any where near enough money to start a PCB collection, (let alone a Cave PCB collection) I thought the Mushi port was awesome and thank Taito to death for it.Circa2113 wrote:Sweet Jesus--tell me you're joking.Sonic R wrote:I like Taito!
They make all these cool new shoot them up games for PlayStation 2! Great games like Mushihimesama, Ibara, Dragon Blaze & Sol Divide, Sengoku Blade/Ace!
Edit:
Taito is the awesome! They even made XII Stag, Homura, and Raiden III!
Re: Psikyo > Cave
And don't forget ESPRaDe, which is considered Cave's best by some.shinsage wrote:With all the Cave games I've played (DP, DDP, Ibara, EspGaluda) I've never been able to really get into them (with the exception of Galuda, which is my fave game from them); the bullet patterns can be pretty, but that's about it. The levels and bosses just don't feel all that creative to me.
I still would love to play Guwange, Dangun, and Progear.
You have no excuse for not playing them, the one's you haven't played are readily available on MAME, so yea good job posting about a developer sucking when you've only played a couple of games you fucking retard.

Let's all just agree that Soukyugurentai rocks the block..... b/c it does.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Both Against The Middle
Great thread! Now get ready for a long-ass post...
I started out with Piskyo (and Video System) shooters, but I came to like Cave more. For the longest time (like many others here), I didn't have access to Cave shooters so I really didn't know how they were. I failed many times in winning DDP on eBay, but I was able to get DP and I liked it. I had also played some ProGear at the time, but it was short-lived because the arcade that had it got rid of it (which is always the case with the good shooters). Not long after, I moved to Japan and had access to them so I was able to really see what everyone had been talking about for so long. I think it's safe to say that I've really liked almost every Cave game I've ever played. They just rock on all levels. And they're fun to play with friends, too; me and EightOne had a blast in Akihabara back in the day. He knows a ton about Cave; a lot more than I do! He's probably only rivaled by The Sheep and GaijinPunch...haha...
I'm not saying that Psikyo shooters suck or are bad any any means. I still love them, and I like their classic style for what it is; just not as much as Caves various styles. I have almost all of the Psikyo shooters, and me and my friends have had many good times with them. I love my Psikyo collection (especially Zero Gunner 2); it has a lot of sentimental value to me.
I also agree with the post that someone made about Cave being Capcom. I don't know about the idea of Psikyo as SNK, but it's a unique view, and I can see some of the similarities. I also like the bullet patterns and speed in Cave shooters more, and like someone else here already mentioned, the bullets seem a little too fast in Psikyo shooters (especially once you get to stage 4). I think Zero Gunner 2 was an exception, though. But I guess that's what makes Psikyo shooters unique...they have that classic feel to them. To me, Cave shooters seem more modern from all angles. Just my thoughts on the subject...

I preferred the hand-drawn look of their older games, but at least their CG based sprites didn't look horrible and out of place like in Strikers 1945 II.They've never sold out and gone 3D either. For this, they rock.

But the Tina Turner-esque "Powah!" in Night Raid beats even that. Actually, that beats any other sound effect EVAH.Gorecki wrote:The "powah hup!" sound effects in Psikyo shmups beat those from Cave games, thus Psikyo win.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

that truly is an awesome sound effect. Cave does have it share of brilliant SE's too though (Galuda as GP posted above for instance).Gorecki wrote:The "powah hup!" sound effects in Psikyo shmups beat those from Cave games, thus Psikyo win.
