Ibara glitch (ps2) [including pictures]

Post by eretsua »

Today I was playing my ps2 Ibara again and something very strange happened!

I was playing Dyne with fighter type-D and while the loading screen was on I pressed some random buttons and wiggled my stick. Then suddenly I see a pattern of enemies that I haven’t seen before in level 1, a little moment later as I shoot them they disappear from the screen still bullet patterns emerge and invisible things explode as I shoot them.

From the beginning the sea background from level 1 is smaller than it’s supposed to be and there for there are black borders on the side which you can fly over and then your ship is on a black background.

after a while I've killed what looks like Meidi's pattern and the it just loops the sea-background with the black borders. One other important things is that there was no music, the sound effects did work and my ps2 kept on making this difficult sound, like it was stuck on a certain section of the disc. When I tried re-starting the game crashed.

here are some pictures of the glitch. sorry for the out of focus and the flash splot. i was very excited and was trying to play while taking pictures...and that's not the greatest combination for shmups.

first there were a whole bunch of the big robots with the rose symbol on their chest:
Image

here the robots walking on the sea water of level 1:

my ship on the black border because the sea back ground image isn't filling the screen:

invisble enemy shooting & exploding:

partially invisble boss(?) shooting & exploding:

the sea-background picture indefinitely loops with no music or enemies:

Don't know if this is a common, well known glitch or something weird that just happened to me. I've used the search function & google to see if it had been mentioned before anywhere but I couldn't find anything.

PLASMO discovered something else on Nev's IBARA (PS2). There was no first train on the third level! Just empty space. We resetted the PS2 some times, and once the glitch disappeared. But the other times we got no first train. So we decided to play on the PCB... Very strange, PLASMO said that his copy of Ibara was ok, and mine is fine too.

I'm sure someone else was complaining of strange stage 3 glitches in the hi score thread.

I played Ibara quite a bit when it came out and never saw anything like these photos though. Very odd indeed.

Its pretty comical how its reported to be happening to a few people so far. I've played mine to death, and I've never seen anything like this happen before.

How are you guys loading the game? Off the disc or via HDloader?

Tried checking your PS2 laser?
Or the disc?

What am I? Ibara tech support? ^_-

The disk was perfect. How could the laser cause stuff like that?
Edit: I'm talking about the train ;)

This is a PS2 you're talking about.

I've never had anything nearly that weird happen. The only two oddities I've seen in Ibara both have to do with Meidi. Occasionally a big slice of her pre-fight protrait will be missing. Also, one time she started firing before her portrait vanished, and nailed me with her stupid destructable pink bullets >_<

This is the JP PS2 version running off the original disc, btw.

I've seen some odd things, three most notable (PS2 version)
First is the first train in stage 3 not appearing, I get this alot (particularly in arrange)
Second is from time to time the first level will start and fly me real fast up past the line of tanks and such and almost past the first 3 medal building, no helis come or anything till the screen slows down. Dunno if this is a glitch or not but it certainly seems very odd
Third is just a full out glitching up of the first 3 levels (playing in arcade mode) which got progressively worse till it became mostly unplayable. This one only happened once
Where the first two are concerned it seems that any particular load of the game could be better or worse. Sometimes the glitches will happen on many runs and sometimes almost none, but usually if I load it up and it starts playing badly it sets the tone untill I turn off the PS2, same the other way around. I load it with a swap disk if that would make a difference.

This is something I was about to ask. How many of you experiencing some of the more extreme glitches are using some sort of disc swap or possibly modded hardware?

I'm running an official Japanese copy on an official Japanese PS2 and have never experienced any of the glitches listed in this thread.

Ditto. J-PS2, Japanese official copy, never seen any of these glitches occur in my games. I think its most likely the loading technique thats causing it, either that or there's some kind of problem with your PS2 laser thats causing data read errors.

@LUN:
Its possible read errors can cause the trains in stage3 to vanish. As with the "stage5/6 robots appearing in stage1" glitch being reported here, the trains are treated as sprites, and a read error could cause those sprites to not be accessed on load (and therefore, no trains).

I had a weird glitch occur once on the second boss. JP PS2 with official PS2 disc. It was all a black background and weird enemies were everywhere. That said, I have experienced a weird glitch once on the second boss on the PCB version as well. The flying ship thing in the beginning of the boss battle immediately flew off the screen and didn't come back! After awhile, the second phase of the boss began, and it was fine from there after.

You can get some really strange glitches to happen if you use restarts over and over on the the Mushi PS2 disc too. I used to use restarts on levels when in practice mode. For example, in level 2 I there were quite a few times when I would restart and the midboss would be at the very beginning of the level!

Is anyone who experienced these Ibara glitches using restarts?

My copy of Ibara is indeed a legit Japanese copy, so its not because its a burn. What makes me think its not the swap but just the disk is the fact that DOJ runs flawlessly with no problems ever, including Death Label. Perhaps its a combination of the swap process along with the port quality, causing the laser to read slightly differently on a disk with more problems in the first place.
Note that I haven't had any sort of similar problems with any other imports

Just saw about the restarts, now thinking about it it seems the more times I restart consecutively the higher chance I'll have oddities appearing during play, most notably the glitch flying past the docks on stage 1 happens much more frequently.

Yeah, I use restarts on stage one if I screw up a run badly. I don't use them on any other stages though (that would be cheating :P), so maybe that's why I've only had problems on stage one.

First off, I’m positive the glitch I experienced is a loading error but I’m not sure what caused the loading error.

I’m loading a disc using a first print near mint condition Ibara-disc, I pre-ordered it from Lik-Sang so it even came bundled with the strategy guide.
Hardware: a chipped (ripper v2) PAL chunky ps2. the ps2 is working absolutely fine and has no trouble with other games.

I had played for at least 45min before the glitch. The console was on all the time with Ibara and I did not reboot the game or console prior to the glitch. I haven’t been able to reproduce it. The console did not shake or vibrate or anything like that so that’s ruled out as a cause.

I’m (still) curious to what caused my ps2 to get stuck in a wrong area of the disc loading weird and messed up graphics and enemies. Any suggestions anyone?
Regardless it was an interesting experience and one that I would love to be able to reproduce (yeah, i'm fond of glitch-FAQ'ing ).

This happens to me all the time, I thought it was just a lame design decision on Cave’s behalf that she starts shooting before he portrait vanishes. I will also play it on a ntsc-j ps2 to see if happens there as well.

Icarus: gotcha, I think you're right ;)
Twe: same here for Mushi, I think it's pretty normal, I've seen that on every mushi disk I've seen (at least 3)! The scorpion at the beginning of the level is a wonderful glitch

that's an interesting point you make. i had been using a few restarts (on the first level only) at the beginning of my 45min Ibara session. but when my glitch occurred i hadn't used a restart but just started the game from the menu.

i'm going to give that mushi restart glitching a try. :) interesting stuff.

seems like a sensible explination. it also seems plausible that restarts could potentially increase the risk of read error, at least in my head that seems plausible.

i guess it's also because my sharp-tv is rather lame. it has a slow response time so all my games suffer from some ghosting. :( on top of that i was handeling my 2-handed-camera with one hand while moving the craft with the other hand.

As I said in the strategy forum I've been having problems with random game crashes at the large clock at the beginning of stage 6. It happens in both arcade and arrange about 50% of the time. I'm also unable to make Midi's last form stop shooting since I can't seem to destroy the small part in the top middle after 50+ tries even after being showed exactly where and when to do it. :?

I'm running this on a modded PAL PS2 with the original game disc.

the glitches could also occur if the ps2 is running for a long time and is overheating - producing errors but yeah the most common reason for console game glitches are read errors.

Would be cool if a glitch like eretsua's could be replicated due to bad code instead of a disc error.

Are there such glitches in any modern shooters?

Probably doesn't qualify as a glitch (more like bad programming) but I remember a post in the old shmups forum describing a Night Raid glitch where you could position your ship in a certain position on the screen and get through an entire level without moving/shooting.

I'd definitely say that that is bad programming, and not a glitch, even if sometimes a glitch can born from bad programming or hardware limitations (Ketsui, Galuda on pcb etc.).

Night Raid glitch -- on Taito G-Card or PSX CD-Rom?

And would this Night Raid "glitch" be for the original Taito G-Card cartridge version of Night Raid or the later released PSX CD-Rom version of Night Raid?

Most likely the G-Card version as I recall I was intrigued by the thought of such lazy programming in a shooter but at the time I was unfamiliar with Night Raid. During that time period I purchased most shooters on release date so I'm sure I would have been familiar with the game if the reference was to the ps1 version.

Doesn't sound like a glitch at all, but rather an incomplete loading of data.

I've had something similar happen to Castlevania: SOTN the first time I bought it years ago. Immediately out of factory sealed wrap, I tested it only to see weird coloring and a really bizarre palette on the title screen. I started the game, the intro didn't load, and Richter was by himself in the dark (with the lifebar IIRC) but with absolutely no background. I walked around, some multi-colored lines splashed across the screen, and the game quickly froze.

Now, I could say it was a glitch and all but I highly, highly doubt it since that never happened again in the weeks that I played it. And even now, if I make my PS2 load too many hi-res image too quickly (Melty Blood being a prime example), the system stutters for a second, which could probably freeze the game or mess up the loading if I continued doing it (I don't plan on testing that out though). And this weird situation you've encountered in Ibara seems the same.
