Such a ridiculously chipper OST I can't recall its stage/trackname, but holy fuck this got me tapping my foot before I knew what hit me. Okamura has superhuman groove sense.

A monument to the fact that you don't need complex or high quality instruments to achieve what you want. It's no Journey to Silius, but it's exactly as cheerful as you described.

As for me, I do have a song from the list to shill for. I listened to the whole thing, and this one immediately got stuck in my head.

Dimahoo/GMD - The Genius of Battle. Extremely fast, intense, and still fits the fantasy aesthetic. It very much feels like a faster version of an RPG battle theme, and now I'm stuck listening to it.

Mahou trilogy got some underrated OSTs - all consistently reflect their series' balance of panoramic fantasia and face-shredding "sup motherfucker?" STG intensity. Nice castle in the sky, nice crater where that monster tank used to be. Dig the rhythm section on "Lead Departure" keeping the vast sweeping synths in check. Not surprising with Sakimoto and Iwata handling the first two, but if you told me they'd composed DaiMahou as well, I'd be none the wiser.

Wish it went by its stage's more badass+alliterative name - STRATO STORM - but "Being Rushed" and the far better-named DEVIDED BY ZERO (I like the Batwider typo :3) are like MD Gauntlet tracks given an almighty do/die one-credit shoe up the ass.

Offhand, my favourite fantasy-themed STG soundtrack remains Dragon Saber (a bit of a cheat pick, as it includes the nearly-as-brilliant Dragon Spirit in beefed-up form). Hosoe's interplays of soaring, intricately spiralling leads and primal rhythm has an uncommonly total synergy with the divinely vengeful earth-razing action, and he is also (as Under Defeat and Ibara reestablished a few gens later) a formidable STG hookmonger.

Half-related, his Assault leans somewhat funky, but the Jungle Battle BGM (mahfuckin Apocalypse Now downriver gauntlet) is something a starving T-Rex would write before eating some mahfuckas heads off. Pure keening bloodlust. Same basic components as his Dragon* duology, radically different effect.

Anyone who has read my posts on here over the years knows I'm a huge Thunder Force IV / Lightening Force fan, and the soundtrack is a major part of that. I preordered the vinyl release from Data Discs before it came out, and when I found out about the new CD issue from Sound Shock last year, I pretty much had to order it on the spot. Everyone talks about "Metal Squad" and rightfully so, but there's so much good music in the game. I'll highlight a couple favorites that aren't as widely discussed, such as Omake 4, and Omake 8. It's crazy to think they had so much amazing music created for the game that they didn't even use it all, and we could have had even more insanely good tracks in game if it were longer, or if they had swapped out a couple pieces.

I love that Einhander's soundtrack is a combination of atmospheric pieces and more intense, energetic stuff. I've always appreciated the ramp-up between the subtlety of the stage 1 track up to the mid-boss, and then the "Chase" piece that plays after that.

Also really digging the GunVein soundtrack, but stage 4 might be my favorite right now.

I just played Air Assault (aka Fire Barrel) by Irem today for the first time (vert, kinda sequel to Air Duel) and was immediately struck at how uniformly excellent the music is through the whole game! Really deserves to be heard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtGEu1xUhRQ

The game is quite generic but solid fun with loads of blowing shit up, and unusually easy, the first Irem shmup I ever played for the first time without pulling my hair out haha

A-JAX and Flak Attack, two of Konami's lesser-knowns sporting some of the most singularly Konamic BGMs ever.

Having tracked down the link, I see I already posted COUNTER BLOW on the previous page! But the link's dead, and frankly, one good blow deserves another. The reedy tone actually reminds me more of Taito, but there's absolutely none of their haunting introspection - just balls-out do your best your have ever done

I recommend A-JAX; the 3D stages are a bit goofy, but easily cleared, brief, and infrequent. The straight topdowns are remarkably furied Xeviousesques, and it sports the rare advantage of a single balls-hard loop.

Flak Attack, I really want to love, but good lord - the bullet visibility can be absolutely punishing, and worse, there is a lightning bolt memoriser hazard that may be the most cynical in all of STG history. Even then, it's solid enough I could see myself working through it. At any rate, first-rate BGM from a largely forgotten game.

My pleasure! It's a quality Toaplanesque, imo, though undeniably a bit on the punishing side. Nearer hardass Raiden than cheerful Daioh. Interestingly, the ACA version has a hitbox reduce option, effectively a comfier arrange mode (it's also an excellent way to see more of the game before taking on the PCB defaults).

With Daioh's director personally requesting (and receiving!) a Rank meter for its ACA release, I wonder if this was a similar case. On defaults, it's the kind of game where you need to pre-emptively sweep enemies, their shots being quick enough to clip your wing if you dodge from a standstill at middle distance or closer.

Regardless, the BGM is exceptionally fiery and driven, even by Konami's valorous standards - I was so happy to see it finally get a home release, having enjoyed its Shooting Battle arrangements for decades. On that AST tip, "Faraway" flat-out rips off Richie Blackmore's solo from Rainbow's "Starstruck." Exceptionally good taste, as expected of project lead and Anthem legend Naoto Shibata!

I liked xanber I's soundtrack the most, for better or for worse. For me it's that stage where you keep descending with the rotating boss. They made it so that he runs away as soon as the song ends, and he's hard to kill on time if you don't know what you're doing, I laughed pretty hard when it first happened to me and it left a good memory.

As a little tangent, each stage intro in rxI gives you dull 'destroy the boss' message, but then the final one hits you with an extra line:

Which i think is a very nice exercise in how much hype you can achieve with the smallest tools.
