Name All Energybar Shooters
Name All Energybar Shooters
Let's make a list with all shmups that have energy life bars. I'm curious to see how many really exist, and how many of them are made in Europe. When this topic is too dull/useless, a mod can kindly delete it.
Note: I make a distinct beetween hit by bullet and hit by ground/walls. When there's a energy life bar for walls only, but 1-hit kill for bullets the game does not count here and goes into the borderline section as for now. Shilds you own per default additionally to life stock do count as life bar.

Does Guwange?
Re: Name All Energybar Shooters
Suguri (PC)
Acceleration of Suguri (PC)
(although if you are at max heat, sometimes one hit can be fatal)
Erst Kerf (PC)
(shield, life bar and life counter... and despite all this you can still get terribly owned due to the enemies' sheer firepower)
CyBattler (AC)
Cloudphobia (PC, the life bar is tied to your score so getting damaged needs to be avoided as much as possible)
Ether Vapor (PC, starts with two shield points/lives, can increase through score extends up to 10 hits or something... or you can already select to start with Max Shield)
RefleX (PC, ship takes up to 6 hits)
All those shooters are japanese. And definitely none of them sucks... Well, maybe CyBattler bosses are cheap as hell but the manly mech action and Macross tributes overpower this.
This one is from Argentina: Protöthea (PC/Wii, has a lifebar although 1-2 hits will make short work of your ship)

Re: Name All Energybar Shooters
I think you should only count those that have energy bars in addition to lives. If you have an energy bar and only one life that's as good as having no energy bar and several lives with instant respawn, IMO.
Europe (off the top of my head):
Blood Money
Xenon II
X-Out
Wings of Death
Lethal Xcess

Re: Name All Energybar Shooters
Agreed. But it takes more time to workout, as for now I count 'em in. Is there a shmup that has energy bar/few hit points but only 1life anyhow?Herr Schatten wrote:I think you should only count those that have energy bars in addition to lives. Re: Name All Energybar Shooters
Obviously most of them will be from Japan, but that's just because most shooter are from Japan.RHE wrote:and how many of them are made in Europe.
You should really determine what percentage of all Euroshmups has an energy bar.
Re: Name All Energybar Shooters
I'd say yes. As long as nobody disagrees it's on the list.alastair jack wrote:Does Guwange?
That's actually something I plan to do. Currently It's just about getting all information, and then categorizing and contrasting them.CIT wrote:You should really determine what percentage of all Euroshmups has an energy bar.

Re: Name All Energybar Shooters
Omega Five (XBLA) (JP) (Natsume)
Has an energy bar that's fairly easily refilled. One energy bar per continue if i remember correctly.
Deathsmiles (Arcade/X360)
Deathsmiles Mega Black Label (Arcade/X360)
Deathsmiles II (Arcade/X360)
If you're going to count Guwange then you have to count DeathSmiles. Mini Energy Bars count as lives. Full bar lost for bullet hit, half bar for physical contact.

The bar is for the reflect force/ghb.
I think the subject of the thread is energy life bars.
lol

Another thing is autoshield. Count them yes/no?

Re: Name All Energybar Shooters
1943, 1943 Kai and 1944 all use a power gauge instead of issuing lives - 1941 has the "vital" indicator which is, essentially, a life counter presented as an energy bar (since the plane only goes "kaboom" when it runs out rather than on every impact) so does that count...?
Re: Name All Energybar Shooters
I think we should start with a very clear definition on what constitutes a health bar. Do games like Castle of Shikigami III or Radirgy/Chaos Field count? You play through the game on a single character or ship, and when you give hit your avatar doesn't disappear. There is a meter for your avatar's health.
I think the fundamental difference between these and other games is that you can't keep getting "extends" when you're at maximum health. You can only keep your bar filled and that's it. No racking up scores of extra ships like in Gradius. You can increase the maximum capacity of your health meter in Radirgy by getting extra extends on top of a full meter. This matters because at one point in the game you can completely refill your health meter.
I'd say Karous is definitely a life bar game.

Of course, that's just an opinion.

Has everyone gone severe brainfart and forgotten about the mighty Lords of Thunder (PCE-SCD)? In fact it (technically) has TWO lifebars!

I'd say the Cave stuff (Guwange etc) qualifies. You don't necessarily die when you get hit, especially true in Guwange.

woot?
Mars Matrix? No no no nooooooo
Herr Shadow has a point there about one health bar as 1-life only. This qualifies both Silpheeds and.. aham... Planet Joker.
What about games with energy bits within lives instead of health bars?
Examples of this are Dragon Spirit and Phelios.
About the criteria, I think games where you die with only 1 hit should be disregarded, regardless of shield or any related special trait (these are aspects of te gameplay, they don't work as "lives" - if you get hit without activating them it's bye bye - sorry next life please...

If memory serves the two "Bokan" shooters both have life bars.
