Sonic Wings Special

Post by Jac2Mac »

A few weeks ago, I bought Sonic Wings Special on E-Bay for Sega Saturn and I thought it was cool because of the following.

1.There are many planes to pick from with more than 8 pilots including the ultra-cute Mao-Mao.

2.There are hidden planes including the flying rabbit from Rabbit Punch.

3.There are many different levels to play through and in some instances you can choose one of two levels to go to.

4.This game is mega-tough because in the later levels the enemy bullets become very fast and if you continue you have to do the whole stage again.

5.Like most Psikyo shooters, this game has multiple endings in single-player and two-player mode.

Does anyone else have an opinion on this Sega Saturn complete with mini-cd that features cheesy pop songs by Mao-Mao?

Is this the only entry in the Sonic Wings series with tate? That would be another nice feature of Sonic Wings Special.

The first one had tate - well in the arcade, not on SNES.

Nope, Sonic Wings 1 and Sonic Wings Limited both have TATE too. Only SW2 and SW3 are on a horizontal screen.

Interesting. One other question: What exactly is the Sonic Wings game on the PS1 (JAP)? Is it Sonic Wings Special?

Yeah, Special was released on both Saturn and PS1. To the best of my knowledge the ports are largely the same.

Thanks for the replies.

Yet another question. I once read here that some working on the Sonic Wings series left to join Psikyo and were at least partially responsible for Strikers 1945. Can anyone confirm?

I can't name any specific programmers, but yeah, I recall hearing that a sizeable number of the Sonic Wings people eventually migrated over to Psikyo...heck, methinks most anyone who's played SW and any Psikyo game could probably note the similarities pretty easily. ;)

Sonic Wings Special is indeed underapreciated.
The PS version is slightly better, just slightly.

one thing to mention here - the PS1 PAL version had an XS Games-style job done on it, with all the multiple endings cut (even though the box mentions it! grr) possible saving removed (not sure on that). And, of course, being a PS1 game it only runs in 50hz.

That's really interesting to know that the Sonic Wins team and Psikyo have a connection -

I'd always thought of Sonic Wings to be a 'poor man's Strikers' series. Although that sounds quite harsh and is probably doing it a real disservice. I do think they're good games, just not quite as awe-inspiring as the Strikers series that's all.

Oh, and I'd forgotten how the helicopter ship in SW Special shoots slightly to the left and right as you move - very much like the regular type of control in Under Defeat (but without the strafing ability, if I remember correctly?). EDIT: I had mis-remembered, you can indeed strafe. There's also a big flock of birds near the start of one of the stages. :)

Love the characters too, how many other games let you pilot a fighter plane as a dolphin?!

Sonic Wings Special for ps1 is a great game, provided you dont get the PAL version. The endings, between-level comments and save game feature have all been cut. I was really annoyed so i got the NTSC version. I can't read Japanese, but trying to figure out what the endings mean has always been a major part of the Sonic Wings series.

Bumping this old thread with a question.

I just picked this up to play on my PSP. It's up and running fine, but I'm left wondering how (or if it's even possible) to flip the controls so I can play it in tate properly. I poked through the old threads and googled it, but didn't see any mention of anyone having a problem with this. I'm left thinking I'm just missing something perhaps.

Anyone know :?:

Short of re-wiring the dpad, not possible without some sort of tate/yoko setting.

Well, that's a deal breaker for me. :x

What were they thinking? And you can't even map controls to all the buttons, only the face buttons. Bah!

You should be able to map all the face buttons (at least on psx, don't see why it would be different on psp considering they have the same button set up). But yeah, it would be quite small on the psp without tate.

EDIT: Misread the post..thought you were saying you couldn't map all the face buttons

Yeah, you can map all the face buttons. But you can't map to R/L. I usually make R rapid fire. It's just the most comfortable when holding it sideways.
