STGT'09 Week 1 - Varth: Operation Thunderstorm

Varth: Operation Thunderstorm (US or World)

Week Themes & Rules
Registration Thread

First week this year is Hidden Gem Week. We're playing Varth: Operation Thunderstorm, which (as you might remember) was one of the choices for the first week a year ago.
Settings
-US or World version! Japanese version has checkpoints and is unacceptable
-default settings
-on Capcom Classics Collection, the default setting should be fine as well
-Autofire allowed (no limit)
-One credit!
-No old scores!


The playing week ends on September 7th, 2009, at 4:00 AM GMT

(GMT).

Score format: Player - Team - Score - Round - Pod Type - Version.

For Pod Type, say Fixed or Smart. Remember proper formatting, and about the spaces before and after the '-'! You don't need to insert commas into the score (though it won't hurt).

For example - proper input: dex - Team Sweet Tacos - 668786 - ALL - Fixed - MAME
Improper input: dex- Team Sweet Tacos - 768575 - ALL - Fixed - MAME

Now, I'd be glad if you kept to the formatting. All of this is processed by a perl script I wrote, and while it's quite flexible, it won't safeguard from, for example, nick misspellings. So try to keep to the format, and updating will be painless for both me and you :).

Also, this year I've cooked something additional up (well, actually, I had that last year as well, but that time it was just for SDA members; decided to make it public this year). Check my webpage for a dynamic results script. What does it do? Well, it takes the scores from the current week's scoreboard and the earlier week results and generates what the scoring for the total individual rankings and the total team rankings look like at the time. Should be handy if you want to check how well you fare against some player etc. It will also print the standings for the current week. You're very much welcome.

US has different stage ordering, most glaring in the end of the first ten stages

It's notable because they're harder than what is given to you in the World version

Your call though, the only difference between them for scoring is the rank you have during those stages

Which version does the Capcom Classics Collection use? And how big a difference is it?

1) USA, and not that big after playing them a few times. Still somewhat annoying if you've gone into the rote pattern and suddenly play the US version in an arcade.

Thanks dex for running the thread this week. And yes, what he said is correct, US or World is fine. I doubt the scoring is significantly different between versions.

in before the arguments from people who hate varth and would rather have r-type leo (japan version with checkpoints) who that missing 200 points due to a plane that doesn't escape as fast in the us version in exchange for higher initial difficulty is just as bad as missing 1.4 million from checkpoint milking in the japan revision

Well, that earlier score was without autofire 'cause I thought it wasn't allowed.

So, I doubled my score! It's CCC on the table because I tried to enter my name with autofire still on :oops:

what emu are people using to run this? Mame Plus doesnt seem to run any CPS based games, and the official Mame doesnt seem to have auto fire?
