Average age of shmup players here and preferred games?

Post by IronGiant »

Just curious - how old are most folks here? 20s? 30s? 40s? 50s?

And do you have any specific shmup favourites?

I ask just as a little 'social experiment' to see if the older players primarily enjoy the older games.

I'm rather decrepit (in my 40s) and generally prefer R-Type, Galaga, Galaga '88, Galaxian, Defender and others of a similar age (although I also enjoy a quick blast on Raiden II from time to time). I dislike the 'bullet hell' games - don't see the point really, but that's probably me showing my age! :)

I'm 20, enjoy Cave games, Gradius series, Treasure games, and other vert bullet hells with fun bullet patterns and interesting scoring systems.

21, games with lots of bullets mostly like Cave and the Touhou games. If I see a Galaga arcade cab anywhere I usually have to play it haha.

I'm almost 18 and I like pretty much every type. Raiden is my favorite. I like vertical more than horizontal.

I prefer horizontal shmups to vertical - the horis seem to have more playability, for me at least.

I'm 30 and grew up on the Hudson caravan star soldier games but also like pretty much any type of shmup. Of the more modern shmups I prefer the "buzz" system games such as Psyvariar and Shikigami No Shiro.

38. I like both old and new. By old I mean 1984 onwards though. I leave the prehistoric bizness to Craig, John Walters and the Twin Galaxies Crew.

I'm 19 and I love any shmups that provide a challenge. I really don't like those games where all they want to do is just kill you the moment you start the game, but overall I like Under Defeat, Border Down and many cave and treasure games.

Not really the same topic, doesn't give info on the correlation between shmup taste and age, it only gives age.

20, about to be 21. Grew with R-Type, Gradius, and such other horis, but really came back to the genre thanks to Kamui, Touhou, and such other verts. I've developed quite a liking for bullet hell games lately as well, though I will play most anything if it is interesting to play (note: this includes "it's interesting to play for survival". I suck very much at shmups, so I don't deceive myself that I can really play for score in most games)[/i]

I'm 20. My favorite shoot-em-up is R-Type. I definitely lean towards the old-guard style-- anything Toaplan, Irem, Konami, Nichibutsu, Capcom, etc. However, I'm not that big into one-screen style games like Galaga and Space Invaders. Raizing, Cave, Takumi, Psikyo are good enough in my mind to break the pace of the old stuff, but I don't play them quite as often.

I'm 28, and mostly play Cave games. DDP and Galuda are my favourites. I occasionally play the oldschool Toaplan-style shooters on the Megadrive/Saturn, though.

22, love the stuff from Cave, G.Rev, Treasure, Toaplan, 8ing/Raizing, Touhou, x.x, Psikyo...pretty much anything Japanese or Japanese-style I can get my hands on. I've had a deep love for shmups since Gradius on NES. I'm not crazy about roughly 80% of doujin stuff out there.

I'm 29, and I play everything. I'll give any new shmup a shot, and I don't trash games before I play them. I prefer verts, though I have just as many horis in my collection. Dodonpachi is probably my favorite game. I like a lot of firepower, and ships. Little girls shooting purple shit dosen't do much for me.

I'm 25, and I like a bit of everything, though not fond of horizontals in general. Cave is favorite, Psikyo a distant second, with lots of love for Takumi, Toaplan, Compile, and to a lesser extent Raizing and Treasure (Raizing has been slowly growing on me, whereas I like Treasure less and less as time goes on).

21; I tend towards vertical games but have a few horis that I mess around with. Mostly danmaku, and mostly Cave/Touhou.

19 I enjoy almost any arcade shmup made after 95 or before 87, and many in between. I used to like console memorizers but not so much anymore. Cave is king with Raizing and Takumi right behind.

28 and I enjoy any shooter that doesn't have a tedious scoring 'system'.

I agree. This is a fresh discussion and I am monitor the results as I am curious.

For me,

I am 32 years of age.
In general I enjoy all shooting games.

My preference is games from the time line of late 1980s into the middle 1990s. The 16-bit era being the focal point of most of my favorite games as well as the Nintendo Entertainment System.

My favorite developers are Compile, NCS/Masaya, Hudson, and Toa Plan…
EDIT: I forget to mention TechnoSoft  :hammerhead:

33, like Toaplan's verts, Cave's titles including their hori Pro Gear, Konami's horis and verts, Taito's verts (hello Darius), Capcom verts like the 19XX series and Varth. Also have a tendency to like the balls to the wall hard Irem shooters.

Bottom line for me it's either Flying Shark (or other Toaplan verts), the 19XX Capcom titles, Gradius series, R-Type series, Darius from Taito, and the DDP series from Cave (can't play the later games though as my PS 2 is unmodded).

Also like the Parodius series, and (GASP) the Twinbee series.
