Raiden DX (and I think 1 & II) - 2P ship is faster.
I've herd about this, about one ship having faster vertical movment, and another having faster horizontal movement, but when I test this controlling both ships at the same time, they have exactly the same speed. Maybe its a single player only thing?
For Radien (not sure of DX) the rank is kept much lower when playing as the 2P ship.
Playing as P2 in DoDonPachi, the stars you collect are added to the previous level if you do not die (otherwise they are reset)l. This can net you up to something like 13M? extra points if you can nomiss both loops, and is why ZBL-NAI switched to using player two after his first gamest video as P1.
Thunder Dragon 2 has a much faster and cooler 2 player ship.
The player one ship is essentially a slow ship with spread shot.
The 2nd player is a fast ship with straight shot.
Many games have different ships as players 2 (that are more than simple palette switch) but that usually don't affect the gameplay, still fun to try though. Examples: The parodius games and 1944: The Loop master.
nimitz beats me to the punch. I was going to mention Thunder Dragon 2, but I must add this:
I was unsuccessful triggering the before-stage bonuses in TD2 with the P2 plane. Perhaps it's because I'm used to the P1 plane, but the P2 plane has lots of speed but little power. That seems to translate into needing to zip back and forth to get that bonus, where it was already pretty difficult (especially without using bombs).
I also think - I'm not sure since it's been a while - that its bomb is different, not in a good way...but I'd check that out before saying it as gospel.
