According to the press release:
Star Soldier R (Hudson Entertainment, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone - Fantasy Violence, 800 Wii Points): Star Soldier R is a new kind of shooter where players aim for the best scores within a two- or five-minute time limit. Develop various scoring strategies, and pump out those points within the breakneck time frame. Assembled in record time to counter the advance of a powerful enemy, the mysterious Brain Forces, the "Caesar" starfighter takes off to fight for the very future of mankind. Shoot down countless enemies, upgrade your ship to the max with power-ups hidden throughout the levels and wage an all-out assault against the core of the enemy fortress. Combining the excitement of shoot-'em-ups with in-depth scoring strategies, this state-of-the-art competitive shooter will keep you coming back for more. Upload your best scores with Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, and pit your skills against the world's best fighter pilots from the comfort of your living room. Hone your skills and show the world who's boss.
I don't know that I'm particularly interested in a shooter that's solely a 2 or 5 minute time attack. Especially not for 8 bucks. I could buy a REAL shooter on the VC for that

You're arguing for a universe with fewer waffles in it. I'm prepared to call that cowardice.

As a shmup player I look for a quality game expearance. Hiding a 2 level game with fancy 3D is not what I would call a quality game. I have never liked timed shmups or incomplete ones. I wonder how big the full game would have been? Really this piece is a slap in the face, a full arcade mode should have been included. Time attacks have rarely (if ever) been the meat of a full shmup with arcade mode.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

As you say, caravan/time mode is closer to 'pure arcade' than any story mode. I've only played the pc demo of Shikigami III, but having to press a buttion repeatedly to get to the actual game ruins the experience for me.Zebra Airforce wrote:I would rather have a two minute mode I'll play hundreds of times, trying to beat my score, than slog through some cheap "arcade" mode. Caravan mode is arcade mode, because caravan = competition. Story mode = eye candy.

Of course SSS did it better, it was produced as a full title, and priced as such in 1990. Why are you comparing this (feature wise) with a $8 downloadable game produced today?Pixel_Outlaw wrote:Perhaps Super Star Soldier just did it better with a complete game and time attack modes.
As does every Cave game produced since ESPRADE. I think you need to switch to coco puffs.Pixel_Outlaw wrote:Ah well this has 3D graphics!!!!!!

Truer words have not been spoken. I just got this game I was primarily bummed about the "campaign" mode, but the caravan mode is just plain awesome. You have a quality, competition-driven shmup here. Definitely worth 8 dollars and I will be playing this game way after summer is over.Zebra Airforce wrote:I would rather have a two minute mode I'll play hundreds of times, trying to beat my score, than slog through some cheap "arcade" mode. The HudsonSoft site says a possible tourney is at hand??? I can't wait to get in on that.

They are both downloadable games for the same price. I'd go with the full game between the two. What does Cave have to do with anything? You said I should not compare a full game to a downloadable game. Why the cave mention? Also Cave is still doing prerender, hardly the "3D" people think of when they talk about polygonal graphics. Ok fine, a sprite is 2 triangles with a z value of 0.Dave_K. wrote:Of course SSS did it better, it was produced as a full title, and priced as such in 1990. I dig the timed modes. It's a reason why i love Pac-man CE so much on Xbox; it's the perfect game to just throw on if you have a few minutse, because whether or not you do well, you'll be done quick!

If you can only afford one $8 game, I think you are in the wrong hobby.Pixel_Outlaw wrote: They are both downloadable games for the same price. I'd go with the full game between the two.

Nothing, I was trying to be silly and point out 3D graphics means nothing when it comes to 2D gameplay.

There seems to be some sort of combo system in the game, and the odd little items that get shot out are good for points. Some enemies you get bonus points for killing fast, or in particular ways.
I think the game is pretty fun, myself. It'll probably take a little time to work out the nuances, but it is fun.

SSS is a fantastic update of an old favourite game.Zebra Airforce wrote:Super Star Soldier is boring and easy, and the caravan isn't even very good in that one.Pixel_Outlaw wrote:Perhaps Super Star Soldier just did it better with a complete game and time attack modes.
If you consider it boring, then this tells me you don't like old school games at all.
You could have said "I don't like it's style", which would be more appropriate here if what I assume is right.
I love the game and still think it's the best GC purchase I ever made.

Just downloaded it.... gameplay is amazingly addicting... stacking your score against the rest of the World/United States is too good.
Currently 12th in Southeastern United States (Virginia)... competition is going to get intense tomorrow

What more can I say I wouldn't be here today if the old school didn't pave the way.

I'd rather have a good "arcade" mode that lasts longer than two or five minutes.Zebra Airforce wrote:I would rather have a two minute mode I'll play hundreds of times, trying to beat my score, than slog through some cheap "arcade" mode. Even several repeatable two to five minute stages to be repeated incessantly to raise your high score would be fine with me (NiGHTS, anyone?)

Anyone got any hints/tips/explanations for the Options?

I'm currently ranked 67th in my region. That means that there are currently 67 people playing Star Soldier R in my region.
On another note, I'd like to see one of you masters post a Star Solder R super-play.

I was 25th in the Northeast region earlier. Dunno about now.
Any tips on beating the level 2 boss? I found his weak point, but I can't seem to hit it enough times to kill him without getting plastered myself.
