Widescreen tv's and the future of shmups

Post by 320x240 »

With widescreen tv's becoming more and more common-place, will there be any new games made for Tate?

Could we be seeing a shift towards more horiz and less verts?

Would more horiz mean the games would become less hardcore?
It is powerup of laser.

Would be very interesting to see if/how developers take advantage of the extra screen real estate, kinda like the dual screens on the DS. I somehow doubt this will ever happen for home consoles, and only little hope arcade developers will do something with it.

Perhaps they will keep the games 3:4 and use the bottom and top bars to display static instruction info or score/stats. I have played with Mame on my 36" widescreen LCD, and put a marque image in a window at the top with the 3:4 game at the bottom. Looks very cool, especially if you can animate the marquee. If I had the time (and development knowledge) I would package an LCDMAME build to do exactly this.

Considering how fantastically meh widescreen Yoko i'd hope devs just keep it at arcade resolutions or whatever.

The only Japanese arcade cabinet that has an widescreen LCD monitor included is none other than Taito's Vewlix which is a 32" widescreen LCD monitor, btw.

Yeah, it would be interesting to see the Japanese arcade shmup developers develop such a new arcade shmup title utilizing the 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio...who will be the first one do so? ^_~

I dunno...widescreen seems kinda counterintuitive to the (vertical) shmup philosophy. If newer shmups were vertical, there might not be a problem. But I guess vertical could be pulled off a la Mars Matrix.

Now with Squeenix characters

For the moment, I see widescreen TVs as mainly prompting people to display channels stretched out. I've seen a few widescreens in public places showing nothing but stretched out news, for instance. I guess the current systems can deal with widescreen well enough, but it doesn't seem a selling point for either a game or a system. Movies have been the selling point for widescreen thus far.

Something I've noticed in some shopping places is that there are already people producing advertisements on TATE-oriented widescreen TVs. This sort of makes me wonder...why can't video game developers do the same?
