Analog control in shmupping
Hi,
I suspect opinions here will be divided about this - with the majority here choosing the disapproving side - but I think it's a great feature.
The only shmup I've played that supports this is Demonstar on the PC, and while suffering some design flaws, is actually pretty groovy to control because of this. Especially in bullet hell shooters where both fast and slow movement is needed.
Please discuss!

mhn... i think i could use the DC-analogstick for some shmups...
and i also could use it for HOTD2 instead of a lightgun...
or for Q3 instead of a mouse...
but oddly i just don't feel like it
ps: if you're into weird input-devices you gotta try MisterDriller for DC - it's controllable with the DC-microphone instead of the pad-buttons!

Heh, PS2 has even worse analog (PS2 analog = fail). I actually found playing Ikaruga on GameCube quite easy with the analog than with the HORI SNES pad.kengou wrote:I like analog control in Gradius V (PS2 analog stick = awesome). In Ikaruga I generally make more mistakes on analog than with the D-pad. I blame that on the gamecube analog stick though which isn't much to my liking.
That said, I also wish more shmups experimented with analog movement.

I'm pretty sure Gradius V had full analog. I remember being able to use Type 2 in more than 8 directions with it, and I know for a fact that you can regulate your speed. I didn't use it much, though...
I actually prefer to use the stick with Raiden III for some reason, even though it isn't analog. I think it's the ship's slower speed.

You can achieve more than eight directions with the d-pad, though, given how the Type 2 rotation works. And speed regulation seems like it'd ruin the whole Speed Up idea, unless you're talking about the speed of the Type 2 aiming.I'm pretty sure Gradius V had full analog. I could be wrong. Maybe I'll have to check it out again.

You regulate speed with the analog in that you can go slower than your current speed level. The slower you go, the less distance between your options. And you can physically point in other directions with the analog control with Type 2, rather than timing the swingaround for other directions (though I'm not positive on this one. I switched over to Type 1 almost exclusively ages ago).

Soukyugurentai supports analog too. I used to use it for dodging some of the slow but tight bullet patterns-- I have to say it's not a bad idea! One disadvantage over a pad or stick though is that it's a little slower to reverse directions. Overall, it gives the game a completely different feel. Both schemes definitely have their advantages and disadvantages.
