I hate when the games provide infinate credits.
I got my copy of Gunbird2 yesterday and noticed that they provided infinite credits. This really ruins the game for me because I have a hard time not just hitting the continue button. Really It makes the game feel really pointless because I know sure as hell I probably won't 1CC the thing. What games have infinite credits? I hope all the DC games don't...

No, this game is not Space Invaders.

You do realize that if you continue on later stages (levels 5-7) you are sent back to the beginning of the level?Pixel_Outlaw wrote:I got my copy of Gunbird2 yesterday and noticed that they provided infinite credits. I'll reiterate what's been said above though... don't credit feed. Problem solved. If you want to credit feed.. you have the option... you also have the option of displaying some self-control and timing down the continue screen timer.

Nothing like learning a little self-control.Pixel_Outlaw wrote:I got my copy of Gunbird2 yesterday and noticed that they provided infinite credits. This really ruins the game for me because I have a hard time not just hitting the continue button.

The infinite credits can help you become familiar with later levels. That way if you have a good run up to a point you won't be surprised when a boss pulls something you've never seen before. But after that, just force yourself to stop. It should become a routine to die, curse, and soft reset.

Most of the time I only give myself one credit (which is perhaps why my skills don't progress as quickly as I'd like), but when I was starting out I always gave myself a strict budget on continues. I'd even think about how many "tokens" I had left.
You'll never get better if you credit feed because there's no reason to give it your all, and isn't that pretty much the point of shmups?

Another good tip - at least when using something like MAME - don't set one of your pad's buttons to coin. Setting a button for start is fine - but you'll be less tempted to credit feed if you have to reach out and smack 1 on your keyboard once your self-set limit runs up.
I usually give myself 3 to beat the game. Once i've beaten the game on 3 if i like it enough to continue playing a 1cc will eventually happen on it's own.

One thing that annoys me with the digital eclipse collections is that they usually have it so just pressing a button besides start continues. It's annoying because it's too easy to accidentally continue when I really just wanted to rush the continue counter down. I just exit the game when I continue by accident, but I do miss putting my name in the high scores because of it, which is annoying.
I think it's cool how some of the arcade games in Konami Arcade DS like Contra actually have limited continues. I have been playing in with the DS in Japanese mode since it has the original version of Gradius without continues. The Gradius variant that plays in English mode is actually one of the Nemesis variants with bumped up difficulty, power up enemies at checkpoints, and continues.

Another good reason to play for score and not only for 1cc. Although playing for score is not THAT exciting in Gunbird 2. But I get the point - not being able to continue whatsoever is different to not continuing because it´s against your honor. In the only two shmups I played at least remotely serious I turned continuing off in the dip settings.Ozymandiaz1260 wrote:I never continue. I mean, it resets your score. Why would you want to do that?
While learning self-control is important, surviving just because you want to see what´s next in the game given that there is NO OTHER WAY to get there is a almost primal instinct. But again, this doesn´t apply for score-based playing at all.

My problem is that I like the actual game events, and scoring while fun, isn't as satisfying as completing the game within the given credit number.
(I just like to use about 5 continues to warm up the the gameplay with then I go for the 1CC.)

Arrgh! I hate this - Strikers 1945 I and II on the PS2 have this problem as well, along with not being able to save your scores.BrianC wrote:One thing that annoys me with the digital eclipse collections is that they usually have it so just pressing a button besides start continues.
