What current pop track would go well with shmups?

Post by Tigershark »

Well, it doesn't have to be that current. I was listening to my iPod on the train back from work tonight and thought that an instrumental version of "Map of the Problematique" by Muse would be brilliant.

How about "Burn" by the Alkaline Trio?

shooters and pop-culture don't exactly fit together. also, I can't possibly think of a song that could fit to any shooter.

EDIT: well, there is that one G Darius boss attack video set that really works quite well. other than that I don't really see many things that could fit.

If shooters and classical music can be put together then so can Pop Culture.

While not exactly pop, I used to play Geometry Wars solely to $10 by M.I.A.

I play R-Type to The INCredible Sound of Drum 'n' Bass, Mixed By Goldie. Usually Disc 1: Spektrum.

Not really pop music I guess.

Pop music sux since at least 1994.

That "Satellite" song bu Guster always makes me think of Shmups
for some reason. Makes me want to shoot down a few orbiting menaces...

Depends on what your tastes are but I know of one song that's specifically about shmuping: Legendary Pink Dots - "Dying for the Emperor"
Finger on the button
Perspiration on the forehead
Splashing puddles on the keyboard
Jerking sideways, upwards, downwards
Blisters
Spiders sing a tune, you do

You can't destroy the aliens
Can't destroy the aliens
It's painful when you're doing well
But we keep coming back

But still he tries as missiles fly
His lady keeps complaining
About the lack of conversation
Session's lasted for a day now
But he won't give up the fight

You gotta destroy those aliens
Gotta destroy the aliens
It's painful when he's doing well
But they keep coming back

Impatiently they brought him food
And forced it down his throat
'Till he was choking
Dribbled gravy, swiveled crazy
Spacey glimmer in his eyes
Likes to splatter all the aliens
Flatten all the aliens
It's painful when he's doing well
Yet still they creep on back
Creeping back for more

Still he won't give up
Though senators slap him on the back
And snap him with their instamatic
Automatic, jerkomatic
He's fanatical but ice cool
As he cannons down his aliens

Gotta destroy the aliens
It's painful when he's doing well
But still they keep on coming back

His score's just topped a million
He's killing them
A winner
Though he's getting so much thinner
And beginning to see stars
Starts to mutter
Eyelids flutter
On the point of passing out

You gotta destroy the aliens
Gotta destroy the aliens
It's painful when he's doing well
But still they keep on creeping back

The nation sighed
His mother cried
He just expired, still firing
Firing high and wide
He tried to beat them 'till the end

Tried to beat the aliens
Tried to beat the aliens
He failed, a failure
A failure

He failed, a failure

That's me from getting owned in R-Type.

The Ramones could back just about any video game. Except maybe Final Fantasy Tactics or something. Picks you up and is so formulaic that you don't really notice. More technical rock/pop stuff probably wouldn't work nearly as well since you're trying to focus on the bullets.

He said current...80s shooter soundtracks (actually game soundtracks in general) were highly inspired by current pop music, as you know. I bet that pop music and game music still have a bit of overlap, but it's not as obvious as it used to be...

You may want to execute me, but I always thought a couple of very early songs by 2unlimited would have fitted into the 1st and 3rd stages of R-Type (the songs were Delight and Contrast respectively from the first album iirc).

Just for the record, I used to love them before I realised they suck. I admit my guilt to (once) liking crap music...

Hi, I'm pretty new here. I'm under the impression that 'doujin' games are freeware? Can anyone direct me to where I can get some good free PC shmups to get started? Or, am I mistaken?

edit: I found a mame emu and some shmups for that.

Here are some. I'm sure there are already some topics on this with tons of links, just use the search function.

EDIT: Also, has a single one of the songs mentioned thus far been a "current pop" song?
