Arena shmups have less restricted movement and scrolling than 'proper' shmups and this lets the casual player feel more involved - even though all he might be doing is just flying/running around with no plan behind his actions. There are lot's of people out there that like 'shooting games' but who can't be bothered to actually learn a strict set of rules. All they want is to 'experience the game and have some fun'. I'm halfway to being such a player myself actually, but slighly less than I used to be.orange wrote:I don't even understand people's draw to it. I'm sick of all these arena shooters. It's like they don't want to spend the time and effort to make a real shmup, so they take the easy way out. I don't want to "shoot in all directions with the right analog stick". I'm glad that 1942 joint strike is coming out this week, good or not, maybe it will remind people what a real shooter is like.

And, of course, this casual market completely dwarfs that of hardcore shmup fans, and arena shooters are a thousand times easier to bang out.320x240 wrote:Arena shmups have less restricted movement and scrolling than 'proper' shmups and this lets the casual player feel more involved - even though all he might be doing is just flying/running around with no plan behind his actions.orange wrote:I don't even understand people's draw to it. Time to put a pin into the balloon and let some of the retarded out of this thread.
Arena shooters are popular now because finally we have dual-analog controllers as standard AND ALSO because people aren't as excited about THREE DEE anymore.
For people who complain about graphics over gameplay, it doesn't make sense to me that there's a dismissal of the current crop of arena shooters. Most arena shooters or similar types of games in MAME are trash or compromised by one-joystick gameplay; from what little I've been able to play of Geometry Wars Galaxies it's more accessible (aside from the oddly constricted Wii Classic Controller) to me than Robotron by a longshot, and doesn't seem a bit less thrilling (in fact I like it more).
The people who make arena shmups generally are the type who would never make an old-fashioned 80s vert scroller. As one of the replies to the blog entry mentioned, you probably don't want them to try.
While we're at it we might as well complain about all the 3D racing games (omg not enough 2D rally racers) because the arena shmups genre is really a completely different genre. There have been some good (if not outstanding, I can't think of any outside of maybe Geometry Wars or Crimson Land that I felt really engrossed by)
If this was 1995 and we were all playing doujins on our X68000/Amiga systems you'd all be screaming about how many vertical and horizontal shooters there were and would people please start making good old (QUALITY) fashioned Space Wars, Spelunker and Stargate clones

The real point is, Joint Strike is out, it seems pretty good in the few runs I've had so far. If it sells well, maybe all the lazy developers making crap arena shooters will say, "hey, lets try making a shmup!", and just maybe they'll make a good one. You never know. Then hopefully the PS store won't be flooded with crap arena shooters every week, as it is now.
