Near as I'm told they're working on a PSP exploit for Homebrew games.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Eh? There's been one for ages. Not for the current firmware, but pretty much every other version as far as I know

Wow, that is incredible. Shame I no longer have 1.5 but this may be worth a mod chip install.

If you're still in the 2.50-2.60 range, you can still downgrade.

That's crazy. Picking up a PSP has become very tempting because of this, but I'd be afraid of getting one and not being able to figure out how to hack it.

Nope, no go. I am on firmware 2.71. Jumping through exploits is a pain anyways so I am just going to mod. Have you tried GW or MM yet?

I'm not sure how easy it is to change the firmware, but I've heard horror stories of people hacking the firmware and doing it wrong, completely messing up the PSP, turning it into an expensive brick.

I sold my old US PSP and got a new JP PSP a while ago. As far as I can tell, mine has a motherboard which has blacklisted v1.5 firmware, so I won't be able to downgrade.

This only has me *slightly* wishing to downgrade though, I'm quite happy with playing my updated UMD games. Waiting for Goku makaimura to get delivered to my home...

Most games seem to run pretty smooth...outside of the higher end fighters,of course.

Yep,I've just tried both MM and GW,and I am very happy to report that they run very well.

My PSP is sooo owning my DS right now

Apparently, you can unbrick a PSP with the modchip.
Anyway, going from 2.0 back to 1.5 proved to be extremely easy 8)

Nice. Again, this just might be worth modding my PSP.

As I've just purchased a GP2X, my fingers are crossed that something like this won't be too far off for it :D Has more RAM available so some of the cache issues that are present on the PSP probably won't even crop up.

I was thinking about getting a GP2X awhile back, but as of now,I have no desire to own one.

CPS and CPS II,both are currently unavailable to the GP2X users, but I'm sure it will come.

CPS-1 is already working in MAME, you can play stuff like Final Fight, Area 88, and Carrier Airwing..

BIG, I forget if I asked you this over PM, but are you using a PSP mod chip? If so, what was the cost and did you have it installed by someone?

Moved to Shmups Chat, for fans of CPS II shooters. A lot of people were waiting for this.

That's what i'm saying Dave... you couldn't really get a feel for how well the game would run when the action heats up because half the video is spent fixed on the title screen and as soon as the game starts the camera decides to start flopping around :(

It's been a while since I posted, but when I saw this thread, I had to try out this new CPS2 emulator (I used the recently released ver.4). It's hard to tell the quality of the emulation from the posted video, but I can tell you from my experience that the emulation is indeed VERY good (close to flawless on some games - fortunately the shooters are the best ones, and even tate is supported!).

19XX, Progear, Ecofighters, Gigawing, Mars Matrix, and Dimahoo are all close to perfect :D . Of course it goes without saying that nothing compares with the actual PCB (I used my Progear CPS2 board for comparison), but this is truly a fantastic treat for shmup fans. Imagine, being able to play all of these games on the go. We never got many ports of these shooters, so I have to say that this is the next best thing.

By the way, I tried the corresonding CPS1 emulator (beta2 release), and that one is excellent, as well. 1941, Varth, UN Squadron, and Carrier Airwing all run without a problem.

Played Progear yesterday during my lunchbreak - works great :D
The sound is a little crappy but other than that I can't complain! Feels great to be able to play Shmups at lunchbreaks, the bus ride to work, and so on... :D

Bullets can get small, yes, but it's a shame to complain when you have a portable shmup-machine in your pocket :D

^^^^

Great impressions, guys. Nice to hear more confirmation on the emulation quality.

If only I had a time machine and could go back and stop myself from updating my firmware.

Have you tried using DevHook and "stepping back" to v. 1.5? should work...

Seriously, my amazement of seeing Progear on a handheld was almost nullified by the horrid camera work. Step away from the PSP, son.

I'm pretty sure if you're already on firmware 2.71 it won't work.

edit: Nope, devhook only works on 1.50.

I have a question for the folks that are using this: are the controls customizable? ex: Can I set firing/bomb options to the analog nub when playing in TATE?

Yeah, I know, but I was thinking maybe you could do it "the other way around", but I haven't tried so I don't know... If I remember correctly, in the Devhook menu, where you can choose version to "emulate" (2.0, 2.5 and so on), isn't it possible to choose 1.5?´Probably not, have to check during my lunchbreak later...
