The dreaded... help me name this shmup

Post by captain ahar »

captain asshat wrote:**oh shit** i just remembered something. a pizza hut, when i was 8-9 years old (early 90's), had a vert shooter. war themed, but with identifiable characters (not that they were popular, they just weren't anonymous like psikyo tended to keep their striker's pilots). i remember some of the art on the cab. surrounding the screen were boxes with pilot information (sporting a picture of each). the game was completely in english as well, only worth mentioning because even in this hole, we've got some japanese pcbs floating around in the few machines there are.
above quoted from another thread. help me out, now that i've found mame, i'd be eager to give this game another go.

i can narrow it down a bit too, i think.
the character you chose would travel around the world (form level to level). but the game was rather serious in its presentation (i.e. not sonic wings like in any way).

another thing i remember the game had some kind of "story" element, as i remember being bored with all the talking.
I have no sig whatsoever.

i think that the game was not part of an established series (that i know of).

also, 19XX is probably too new, and doesn't use character selection, it uses ship selection (if you get my distinction). thanks.

looking at screens my hopes were high, but alas that is not it. on the upside though, it was fun. :D don't know why but i've never been obsessed with playing the "best" of something. the game is obviously a rip-off, but its still entertaining.

another thing i seem to remember. i think at the start of the game for sure (and maybe start of every level, never could beat the first) the game had a sequence where the pilot received his next mission over the radio. also, you might have had control over the order you played the stages, or the starting stage at least (as i said, never did get very far).
I have no sig whatsoever.

Jesus, that sounds so much like UN squadron/Area 88, but as you said it was a vert so that's out. ???

btw, I think we all like these threads, actually (a bit of trivia and all)

It's a Hori or a Vert?

Almost sounds like Metal Black, but I know I'm wrong.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Jesus' BE ATTITUDE FOR GAINS:
1. Pure, Mournful, Humble Heart
2. Merciful Peacemaker
3. Suffer for Righteous Desire
