N64RGB picture issue

Post by vinnycthatwhoibe »

I recently modded my N64 to use Tim's newest universal board for my N64. Most of the time it looks really good, and the deblur is a great feature to mess around with. However, I'm noticing a weird distortion that I'm not sure if it's simply because that's what happens when you have a clearer picture with the N64, or if something is actually wrong. I usually see it around areas where something bright is lighting up an adjacent surface. So, fire, lights, etc. I took a picture of the same spot in Perfect Dark with both RGB and S-Video for comparison. This occurs regardless of deblur being enabled. (For reference, I'm using HD Retrovision's SNES cable).

Is there something wrong with my install? Or is this just what happens when you clear up an N64's picture? The odd part of the picture isn't static either. As I move, it becomes more or less visible.

Here's another example of the picture issue. If I get close, it has a noisy "snow" look to it. It's not just a solid piece of color.

Update:

In the event anyone cared, I seem to have resolved my issue. Basically user error. I believe my soldering iron was too hot and ended up damaging the fine pitch adapter (seen here http://etim.net.au/shop/shop.php?crn=20 ... how_detail). After ordering a replacement, lowering the temperature of my iron, and CAREFULLY re-doing everything my picture is all fixed! Not sure if this will help anyone but I hate when people don't follow up on their posts!

Thanks for the follow up :-)

I have this exact issue. As in... the artifacts I see are as you photographed them. With my N64 I have no need for the fine pitch adapter so that couldn't have been it. I think I will try to resolder the flatcable again, or try with another flatecable I have lying around here. I do believe that it has something to do with the solder connections to the chip. We'll see...
