PVM 14M4U "RGB Lines at the top of the screen"

Post by zionfarm »

Greetings from South Korea,

I have been very Blessed to have been given this PVM. First I will start by saying that I am a Army guy stationed in Korea right at the DMZ located on a small ROK (Republic of Korea) camp called Camp Bonifas. One day I went up to my roommate who is the S6 noncommissioned officer in charge while at work to ask Mr. Kim a question on obtaining a PVM here in Korea. When I finally got through to him he said lets go talk to Mr. Kang he knows all about that stuff. Mr. Kang is the camps go to guy on everything electrical, and he is also in charge of all our wiring and security stuff on the camp. When we got to his little building Mr. Kim informed him on what I was trying to obtain. He said wait a PVM and I said yes a PVM like in production video monitor.

He said oh those old things. Well low and behold he bent over and under his work table which mind you holds all kinds of testing electrical equipment meters, and stuff. He pulled out exactly what I was searching for, for the past 3 weeks in Korea. I quickly go to assist and pick up the little warrior of a monitor as I set it atop the work table. He immediately plugs it in and it turns on with out flaw. Long story was he bought it brand new in japan for calibration and other things back in the late 90's. Serial number 2018167 manufactured August 2000. Hours I am not sure as it was not used in the production aspect being he has been working on the camp since the early 90’s with this little guy.

The best thing about is he gives it to me……………….FOR FREE and says Merry Christmas, he says I don’t need it too heavy in his Korean accent. I go to give Mr. Kang a big Ass hug and say thank you Mr. Kang. He even gives me 3 BNC to RCA adapters with it. I take it to my room knowing that at first I was gonna go the XRGB Mini route but I said SHIT……. not for now I ain’t :) :). I plug it in and I noticed that the screen is condensed on all sides hmmmmm. I go straight to the world wide web LoL and start looking up fixes for it and reasons why the red green and blue line was resting at the top of the screen where it was being cut off. Everything appears to work and the thing was very well cared for. I recently downloaded a service manual of this PVM and started to adjust the settings in the service mode according to page 17 under the STD settings for example
NOR 50 DEF H FREQUENCY MAX STD
255 85
So I would adjust my monitor to that if it wasn’t on it and all of the other settings which took a hot minute.

I don’t have a Everdrive so I will be looking at getting the 240p test suite downloaded on the Wii and fine tuning the PVM with that as well since I don’t have any other way of adjusting geometries.

Now my question for you guys is what else can I do to solve red green and blue lines at the top of the screen issue?

P.S.
Now I do remember Mr. Kang plugging some test device into the PVM and showing me that it works and I was reading through the service manual and it did say that. Also the game "The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past" is from the Wii VC and the other game is on my Saturn.

Note
“When the monitor is in the under scan mode, the dark RGB scanning lines may appear on the top edge of the screen. These are caused by an internal test signal, rather than the input signal.”

The RGB lines on top of the active scanning area are normal. You're supposed to adjust the vertical height of the image until these are moved out of the visible screen area and covered by the monitor's bezel instead.

The 14M4 doesn't have geometry controls in the standard menu, but the service menu has everything you need. Check for the menu entries V SIZE (along with H SIZE, V and H CENTER) to adjust your picture.

I did see these settings but none of them fix the problem.
Thx for the heads up Fudoh.

It might be something internal?

I am under the assumption that I will need a multi test signal generator along with the service manual that I do own. So what I will do is I will take it back to Mr. Kang, hook up his multi test signal generator and go off the manual to adjust vertical deflection adjustment.

You shouldn't need a test signal generator just to adjust the basic geometry.

If you put VSIZE it at its lowest value, then adjust it all the way to its highest value, you see no change on the screen as you do this?

and mind that there are various V SIZE settings, affecting different geometry slots depending on the actual signal (or monitor setting)

I'm not sure why you would need that. You need to access the service menu by most likely pressing button combinations unless it requires a remote control.

I would start by Google your model number and service menu.

When you reach the service menu you will be looking for :
HPOS
VPOS
VSIZ
HSIZ

By the way your story touched me on Christmas. Thank you for your service in Korea. I really appreciate you. :!:
