XRGB3, Mini or wait for XRGB4?

Post by sazyario »

So, I've been using an SLG-In-A-Box for a while now. Sick of it though. I have multiple systems and I dislike the OSD controls. Constant fiddling with options ruins the console experience. I feel like I'm using emulators.

I want a plug and play solution like the Mini, but want the wide range of use as the XRGB3.
Have there been any serious rumors about the XRGB4?

I don't have the kind of money to run my systems into the xrgb3 then into the mini.

Mini versus XRGB-3 is mostly a question about which type of display you're using. And the XRGB-3 is by no means easier to handle than the Mini.

I think I elaborated poorly.
The mini has better plug and play, while the 3 has more diverse inputs.

As far as output goes the 3 has enough. I can use a dvi->hdmi adapter.

I should probably just get the mini. Who knows when the 4 will come out

Fudoh should design the XRGB4 :)

Wut ? Crafty never said it's dead, that sort of stuff takes a lot time.
Still, I bet it will be released before the XRGB-4, maybe way before.

consider the XRGB-3 as VGA only. DVI can only be used in it's upscaling mode without scanlines and with added lag.

My guess would be late 2015.

Assuming Bitblitz is still on the cards (I have heard nothing to the contrary) BitBlitz plus a DVDO scaler could be a potent setup.

From my experience, the Mini is by no means a plug and play solution. You'll still have to adjust your settings through an OSD menu depending on the source (if you want a near perfect result).

Argh. All this talk about possible new Micomsoft scalers is quite aggravating given the Mini's continuing teething troubles :-/

What are the chances of Micomsoft finally getting things perfect with the XRGB-4? Would have thought there are just too many variables. To be fair, if they'd release the Mini but without the horrible delay when a console changes output resolution, I'd be happy.

There are several things that need to be fixed but Micomsoft is not a huge corporation with thousands of staff members working on ways to fix the Mini every day unfortunately.

It seems like their top priority is working on XRGB-4/Frameister 2 at the moment due to lack of any major updates.

With 4K on the horizon they've got a whole other beast to tackle. It will be very difficult to get everything perfect.

Until we get per-scanline updates (requiring fast-enough displays) I don't know what the new model is supposed to do other than offer incremental improvements to frame quality. It'd be nice, but not "gonna drop all my moneys on this" nice. Depends on whether there's some kind of GSync / FreeSync support I suppose.

From a hardware point of view, I wish Micomsoft would return to a single FPGA solution or at least the option to disable the secondary scaling unit. I can very well live without "proper" 480i or 1080i deinterlacing in favor of speedy 240p and 480p processing.

It hasn't been announced, but from the little info that is out there, the XPC-5 is most likely the next product.

I wonder if it would be more worthwhile for them to split the XRGB into different product lines for more specialized use cases than to try and make an XRGB-4 that's an all-in-one machine. It just seems like the latter would be increasingly difficult to do well and at a reasonable price point.

But then again I don't really know what they would add to the XPC-4's functionality.

The recent teaser was probably for some cheap converter/splitter/switching device....

Definitely not dead!

I told Fudoh about this awhile back, but sometimes life gets in the way of our projects. Two years ago my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, and my forward progress on all fronts slowed way down. Fortunately her treatment is done, and she is cancer free now. So just as I was starting to crank up my hours on the BitBlitz in December, a side opportunity came along that seemed like a quick hole-in-one project. That project became the Arcade Monitor Test Pattern Generator (TPG) which mushroomed into a back order of close to 200 units. I've shipped nearly 1/2 of those units, so I finally have some breathing room to get back to the BitBlitz.

I'm still committed to this project, and looking forward to having a substantial update to share with everyone in the near future.

Awesome news. I've been following this project for a while, and eagerly await further developments. I'm currently using a GBS8220, which while functional, isn't ideal (as we all know). Hell, I'd love to simply have a unit which doesn't shove a big splash screen over the revision information when booting an arcade board :/
