Super Nintendo RGB JP21 SCART cable XRGB compatibility

Post by 6arm79 »

Hello everyone,

For my first post on the forum I have kind of a newb question.

I have recently decided to buy an XRGB Mini, and have begun to acquire SCART cables for use with it.

I understand that the XRGB requires japanese scart cables, not european ones. For this purpose I have purchased what I believe is a JP21 pin SCART cable (original nintendo brand to boot).

Based on these pictures, can anyone tell if this is the right cable, that won't fry my unit?

If you need more pictures, let me know.

Also, I noticed that the connectors look really corroded (colored green) and gummy/dirty in places, is that going to be a problem? Is there a way I could clean it out?

Thanks in advance.

That cable does indeed look just like the official Nintendo Super Famicom JP21 cable. Under nor circumstances it should work. Unfortunately though that corrosion is a sign of the electrolytic capacitors having gone bad and leaked. As such they will need to be replaced or the cable wont work. Also, clean off the residue as soon as possible as it is eating away traces at this point.

That does appear to be a JP21 connector, feel free to use it.
The pins can be cleaned via rubbing alcohol & q-tips, if that doesn't work you can try scraping the oxidization off using fine steel wool or a flat-head screwdriver. If you get desperate, what I like to do is apply a tiny amount of solder flux to the board & then coat it in an ever-so-slight layer of solder. This should clean any oxidization completely & ensure conductivity if you're good enough with soldering.

The caps have definitely gone bad. Will be fine though after recapping. In this state it can cause problems like dark images or no picture at all.

The mini works fine with standard SCART cables you just need to buy a new, SCART compatible mini-din adaptor. SCART cables for most consoles are readily available whereas JP21 cables can be exceptionally difficult to track down. Your choice.

Thanks for the replies. Now, as far as recapping it, what does that involve? I have no experience soldering.

Desoldering the connections to the capacitor on the underside of the board. Cleaning up and neutralizing the corrosion present and putting in a new capacitor with the same capacitance and ratings as the old one.
