The hardware is almost certainly the same as their GameGadget, we just have to hope the emulation is good enough. I'm also guessing they're going to be using the "GameGadgetGames Marketplace" (or a special skinned Neo-Geo version) to sell more games later on. The dock and joystick are kind of neat, but I still think it's rather pricey.

hmm I wonder will it be the same stick as the Neo Geo 2 Wii one, cause I didn't really like the feel of that (esp. the buttons) and I think people were saying it was NOT the same as the original :(

See while I love the idea on it I kind of wish there were more games.

200 buckaroos for that selection is kind of eh.

I love me some neo geo, but the price point (and the limited library - unless they wow us and have some sort of digital download service for more Neo Geo games) makes the PS Vita and 3DS a whole lot better in comparison.

That and, you know, the 3DS is cheaper than this thing.

yeah it's emulation is definitely REALLY good and stable - up there with PC Engine emulation

I never use any of my handhelds - I don't know why - I just never do - I have a 3DS and I haven't really played it since messing around with the augmented reality card stuff when I first got it :(

If they've designed it so the handheld docks in the cartridge slot, that's kind of rad.

$200 is not out of line for an AES, plus it's basically two systems in one, and comes with 20 games, so I think the price is pretty reasonable.

There was another handheld NeoGeo thingy a while ago that I think was a lot more expensive, and didn't have any option for connecting a joystick, so this is definitely a step up.

Oh, I think it's the same one?

Looks like they haven't changed the whack circle d-pad thingy. sadface. Also, every portable electronic device must now resemble the iPhone in some way, apparently.

It is.

And while the screen got larger (3.5" on the initial specs, 4.3" now), it's still a 16:9 screen and I bet, it's a 240 line screen just like on the MD portables. The NG games run in 224-line resolution and will likely be (badly) upscaled. On the MD/Genesis portables this caused vertically scrolling to be nearly unplayable.

For that kind of money I'd want a better game selection. KoF 95? Seriously?

I'm pretty sure that this is fan service (A.K.A. fleecing) for (of) collectors, not players. There are a lot of Neo Geo collectors out there who will snatch this up and never unbox it simply because it's "authorized."

Anyone who is casually interested in playing these games knows that there are about a million other ways to do so (legal and otherwise), and anyone who is serious about playing them won't settle for 2nd rate upscaling/emulation.

There's nothing second-rate about Neo Geo emulation nor has there been for ten years.

Hardcore collectors recognize that SNK died in 2001. So this just leaves stupid wannabe collectors. But hey, everybody's gotta make a living, right?

True if you are emulating it on proper hardware, but there are many unknowns about this device, and there is certainly the potential for it to suck. See Fudoh's post above.

IF it was an AES... but I suspect it's not. The "AES" is just a docking station/TV hook-up module. Even the controller ports just seem to be USB.

If it were an actual AES, I'd buy it.

It should be known that the USB-compatible replica AES sticks are being sold separately.

From the promo picture, they seem to be a good deal smaller than the original sticks, though. They may not fit custom buttons/joysticks.

Hopefully this will be hacked. I don't think there's any way SNKP will end up releasing the complete Neo library for it themselves. The initial list of games is pathetic, it's the same lineup of largely mediocre near-launch titles they keep trotting out onto all these compilations and download services.

Not really looking forward to this. Had my flirtation with handheld neo-geo on the GP2X, and wasn't all that pleased with it. Only improvements this could offer is more accurate emulation, better dpad/stick, and better battery life.

Let's not forget that the GP2X is 4:3 as well. 16:9 isn't great, but I can understand why. They could always used a letterbox with some kind of added features like art and statistics in the unused space.

People are balking at the pricepoint, I actually wish it was higher. Decent screens, controls, and batterylife don't come cheap, and the last thing this market needs is another cheap flimsy handheld that could have been better.

Yeah, the original price point was rumored to be something like $800. If it was a top-of-the-line piece of hardware (i.e. OLED screen, NGPC thumbstick, very sturdy build, ability to play Neo roms without emulation) and had every game from at least the AES library available at launch, it would be pretty reasonable.

Unfortunately Blaze has made some very poor quality Genesis handhelds before, and I fear this will be no different. Supposedly the vertical scrolling on them is so jittery it's unbearable to look at. Still, SNKP doesn't whore out their old games like Sega does, so I'd hope they'd have some stricter quality standards for licensing.

I wonder what's the size of the AES-shapped docking station, anyone got this info? Could be a cheaper alternative for consolizing MVS if large enough but it's hard to tell from pictures only.

I would very much assume that the handheld fits the "cartridge" slot hoirizontally. This would make the slot the size of a SNES cart...

I fart on this foolish device.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

This bullshit somehow renews my interest in building at least a semi-faithful Neo clone. As a concession to practicality maybe emulate 68K and YM2151 on a CPU core or two because the original chips are discontinued AFAICT and the replacements have subtle differences anyway, but at least put the graphics hardware in FPGA/CPLD to minimize user-visible temporal fail. It's not like Neo is some ridiculously arcane architecture; it's actually goddamned elegant if you understand the context around it, in a "holy shit, why didn't I think of that" way. They basically took the single most incisive graphical insight embodied by Amiga (unlimited-height sprites are cheap if memory is cheap) and built a whole system around it.

Has anyone been working on this?

Oh my god.

They're actually going to sell individual games on packaged SD cards.

Talk about collector exploitation.

Image

I guess this confirms that you won't just be able to drag-and-drop roms onto any old card and play them, like on Blaze's Genesis handhelds.

You can already preorder the thing for $200. The screen's 16:9 and the same resolution as the PSP, so I hope there's at least an option for letterboxing.

I'm looking forward to see how long it will take until the SD card's encryption is hacked - can only be a matter of hours.

If the screen gets a 480x272 resolution (like PSP), it will be ugly.
