Man, that's some shit. Dropping quality on paying customers? That's bullshit.
shit, I was even considering a crunchy subscription, but fuck that
if they wanted to cut costs, dropping quality for free viewers would have been more reasonable -- no one would like it, but you're also not paying for it

full disclosure: I actually don't care too much about video quality, I've got a bunch of series encoded at hilariously low bitrate+resolution on my computer, although that was to save disk space -- converted a series that took 26GB into one that took 2GB
but I did that on my own, I wouldn't pay for files that lo-fi

Yeah, key word here is "paying customers".

Jaco the Galactic Patrolman

Uh, didn't know Toriyama wrote a legit prequel to Dragon Ball. Well that's it, rather short, nothing great but it explains some things and shows characters that were only vaguely mentioned in the entire saga if never.
Spoiler: show
like Bulma's sister and Goku's mom

We actually get a glimpse of it in some episode of that Dragon Ball Super abomination, I didn't get that it was a manga.

Gine was a nice character, but I hated how Toriyama just ripped off Superman's sending to Earth there. Bardock's first OVA had some nice violence and amazing music going on, this was kinda meh.
Oh, and Tights looks pretty good for a 60-year-old in Super.

He~nshin!! - Sonata Birdie Rush

So it's supposed to be about golf...but it's full of over the top ecchi apeshit nonsense.

*seal of approval*

This is practically my last remaining thread of interest when it comes to manga (besides great sagas), picking at random one that should be about a completely boring everyday life theme, like lesser popular sports, board games, normal business/trade, whatever *yawn* topic, and finding the mangaka limit breaks everywhere he can, either because he desperately needs readers, or he knows the audience will be minuscule and he doesn't give any fucks.

Then you should read Grand Blue, which is about "diving".

So Toonami is picking up Tokyo Ghoul starting this Saturday. I actually liked the sub of it, but it looks like the dub might change my mind.

Since you mentioned it I've just started this one myself. After you get past the initial scanlations which have been transferred at junk quality levels with a charcoal finish just to ensure you can't actually see anything, it does become wonderful in almost every respect. The concept of Hole is amazing: every angle and place looks totally different, but similarly skewed.

I also finished Velveteen & Mandala just before and it might be Matsumoto's headfuck to top them all. Completely batshit until the wrap up, which twists it all into a suddenly sensical lens.

I'm currently reading her manga adaptation of Atlus's Maken X. Good shit so far, it's even more fucked up than the game, and I like that.

Oh wow, that's funny. I remember doing a quicky search for the manga one day and being pretty impressed by the art style on the snippets I came across (which is very high praise considering it's up against Kazuma Kaneko's artwork on the original game).

Talking about that, Ghost in the Shell live action is out in a couple days.

Scarlett Johansson and PG-13, to make sure everything you love about Ghost in the Shell isn't there.

After what we did to the indians, rap music, tacos and burritos... the dark horrors we'll inflict upon weeabodom have just begun. The things Cameron is gonna do to Battle Angel when he gets around to it 12 years from now... hoo.

Oh my god. Monster Musume: The Hollywood live action movie. 30 years from now. It's... too plausible.

I recently finished watching After War Gundam X, and I thought it was alright for the most part. I liked most of the characters, the Satellite Cannon was very well done instead of being an asspull weapon, the more childlike elements of something you'd see in ZZ and Victory blended together well with the usual Tomino-ish realism, and the alternative perspective X had on UC concepts like Newtypes instead of just taking them and doing original nothing with it, though for every original idea there's two poorly executed ones.

It always struck me as odd how despite a 15-year long nuclear winter we know nothing of the situation where humanity hid from the pollution, while cities are vibrant in terms of people and economy. You'd expect more post-apocalyptic societies here like in Fallout, but X barely touches upon the post-Disaster rebuilding of society. Past the first episodes when survivors tell legends of mythical Gundams, you wouldn't be able to tell a devastating war happened at all.

Of course the setting does bring itself new governments like the New Federation and some old ones, and a disorganized society brings people like Vultures with them. While a fitting and interesting concept, they get dropped halfway through in favor of the New Federation as the main antagonist only for Vultures to never get mentioned again. The Frieden doesn't even do Vulture things for the most part, I don't even know how they can get enough money for supplies to begin with, or whatever the After War equivalent is.

Roybea and Witz also stop being interesting halfway through (aside from some character interactions) once their character arcs were largely finished in the crossroads episode, only to become sidekick pilot #1 and #2 afterwards. They didn't even explain how they got their hands on Gundam-class suits. Not everything has to be a fucking Gundam. Even the Frost brothers have fucking Gundams.

The Frost brothers are also wasted potential. Their motivations are mysterious at first and the revelation of them being low-level Newtypes was also interesting, but when their motivations at the very end boiled down to 'we were bullied so we're gonna take it out on the world', it was so fucking childish that it became hard to take them seriously at all in retrospect. Not to mention, their constant fights with the GX almost made them seem Jerid-tier. How often did Olba grab the GX in a hold only with his pincers so the other guy could finish it off with a beam saber, only for someone to fire at them at the last moment so the GX could break free, as Olba was reluctant to leave as oniichan told them to retreat?
They're also responsible for the brief shitty psycho-of-the-week phase almost every Gundam show goes through. What the hell did they mean with that they had to uphold their sense of aesthetics anyways?

Garrod is a pretty good Gundam MC in general. He's likeable enough without being a runt like most kids his age, he isn't moron, and changes enough over the course of the anime to stay fresh without becoming too angsty in the process. It does annoy me that other characters have to constantly remark BOY GARROD, YOU'VE SURE CHANGED. You don't have to spell it out, I can SEE it.

The 'muh romance' part didn't really do it for me either. While I admired the lengths Garrod went to protect Tiffa, my main problem was that Tiffa is so fucking passive. She's less of a character, but more of a plot device to constantly appear at the doorway of the bridge to warn Jamil about some impending shit. A romance requires two characters to interact and bond with eachother, and in this case I only felt it from one involved party. It's like she's barely doing any work to bond with Garrod. Nice lipstick, though.

Jamil is a pretty good mentor character overall. He's not some OP character who always saves the day at the last moment, as he's got some weaknesses of his own he has to overcome. He does get over his cockpit phobia bizarrely quick, though.

The Revolutionary forces are sadly largely underdeveloped as a result of the early cancellation, though their core ideals were at the very least developed. It's a bit strange how an entire war seems to result from a difference in opinion between two fatsos in charge as none of the underlings involved seem to really believe or care about it. X barely delves into the grunts anyways.

The fights don't get too repetitive for the most part. Conditions and situations are changed up frequently enough to stay interesting, but the fights have a way of dragging on longer than they should as the animation isn't much to write home about.

So yeah, though X has an entertaining cast of characters and does enough to stay original instead of being a carbon copy of other Gundam shows, many of the original ideas and the world building do tend to fall flat on its face. I liked it for the most part, though I don't see why the Japanese dislike X so much.

Sheeeit, who knew?

She's done a superb job with this one, love the artstyle. Shades of Eastman & Laird mixed with morbid overtones, skull cracking action, and a massive dose of very nicely executed weird. It makes me want to sit by the window on a rainy day and burn through it.

I watched the first Project A-ko theatrical movie the other day. Very funny at points, but mixed with a callous disregard for innocent life (all those poor people!). Animation went back and forth in quality it seems like, but all in all it was a great bit of fun. The action scenes are quite fun to watch, especially the final attack on the spaceship. And what a fantastic fucking soundtrack, hot damn!

Do the sequels keep up the pace?

A-ko 2, 3 and 4 are more of the same nonsensical humor and action, if you liked the movie give them a watch.
I've heard the spinoff (A-ko the Versus) is kinda boring.

Yep, it's catching up to the manga.
I'm re-watching Hi-sCoool! SeHa Girls.

Yes, I want to remember A-ko 2 and 3 being at least decent and "more of the same" if you liked the first one.
The soundtrack does change a little bit from the first one.

On the other hand, Versus is trash.
