Just watched Melancholia... Hated the Kirsten Dunst character, but I guess that was the point

I always discourage others from collecting. There's nothing good I can list from it. The silver lining might be that if others stopped collecting videos altogether, I may be able to get that Ilsa box set for cheep 8)

Sometimes I dig art house, but the novelty of weird for weird's sake is gone. The films I really like, even if they are often more intellectual, still speak to me emotionally. Lynch still works for me (sometimes) because I think he ultimately still wants to tell some sort of story. Art house though can sometimes just feel like a chore.

I view Ken Anger short films the way I see music videos. I don't see it as high art or anything deep and abstract to think about. Hell, I'd consider David Lynch and David Cronenberg more of a chore since their movies go way out there for 2 hours, whereas a Ken Anger film is 10 minutes, 20 minutes, 30 minutes at the most. I just dig the look and the style.

I think video art can be long-winded and look really crappy, but the only reason I don't collect those is because a lot of them are not commercially available (only Wegman and Viola seem to be commercialised) 8)

I discourage people to collect solely for my own benefit. I don't want people getting their hands on (insert item) instead of me! Collecting is my life, really. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Saw Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Spent most of the movie trying to figure out who was who, will have to watch again. Since I caught a matinee the theater was full of geriatrics whispering plot interpretations to each other, which didn't help. Gary Oldman and John Hurt were awesome, as was, surprisingly, Mark Strong. The other heavyweight Brit actors didn't really get enough screen time to put out memorable performances.

Rented "Terminal Man" on the Xbox 360 / Zune last night.
Old movie, but sort of interesting. Nice glimpse into the early days of computers and so forth.

Dragon Tattoo, the new one. Pretty good despite some eye rolling tropes. Love Daniel Craig.

Finally checked out the Blu-Ray version of Columbiana. It's as if the Mathilda character from the "Leon: The Professional" flick grew up to become an hitwoman. Like the elevator shaft scene that does pay homage to The Professional's scene of Mathtilda going down the makeshift escape chute.

Would've been interesting if Natalie Portman were cast to play the main character or as a cameo appearance as a rival hitwoman in Columbiana (of course, that would entail a different script reworking to pull it off successfully).

yes I got the dog but I thought it was possible he was the girl previously.

 I hate when people do this too I'm sorry though people in this thread already mentionned the end was the beginning of the 1982 movie.
Is there a spoiler function on this forum?
Something that wouls be great to add :D

*** Warning Heavy Spoilers!! ***

I don't think she turned into the dog actually. At the beginning of the prequel, right after the alien gets out of the ice slab, the dog in the cage is seen trying to bite its way out and later on they find blood all over the cage, so it is obvious that the alien assimilated it too!

So I watched the new “The Thing 2011” prequel.
Even though it was not as scary or thrilling as the 1982 film with Kurt Rusell, I must say that it was quite good and it had the old-school sci-fi thriller feel into it!
It was very nicely linked to the sequel as it finishes directly at the point where the 1982 film picks up! The scene with the chopper chasing the dog in the Alaskan wilderness is identical. Also many things are explained, even the axe Kurt Russel finds at the Norwegian base stuck in the wooden door is shown in the prequel, the guy with the severed wrists and throat frozen on the chair, as well as the half burned monster with the 2 linked faces that is taken back to the US camp in the 1982 film, is shown how it was created!

But there were a few mistakes:
In the 1982 film, there is a video shown with the Norwegian guys blowing up the ice revealing the buried space-ship and them being photographed circling around the round hole, however in the prequel there was only a tunnel they had dug up and the entire ship was revealed only after its engines were activated thus melting the ice on top and around it.

There were also 2 things left open (Or plot holes depending on the definition) for another sequel or even a prequel before the 1982 film! Half way through the movie, when the chopper leaves to transport the sick guy to the military hospital, they decide to land again when the girl calls them back. At that point the other guy turns into a monster attacking the poor sick guy and the chopper is seen crashing some miles away behind the mountain. Later the 2 pilots return on foot to the base, however it is not made clear what happened to the monster and the sick guy who was attacked on board the chopper?!
For all we know, it could have survived roaming around Antarctica like the dog, or frozen into the ice until another team finds it and then this whole thing could have happened all over again, this time in a populated area which it would have been transported to.

Also, what happened to the girl at the end after she burned the guy who was missing the earring in his left ear? Did she freeze to death in that tracked snow vehicle?! Did she drive to the other Russian camp/base the guy told her about before she burned him?

The guy she burned at the end, was he really possessed by the alien or did she make a mistake, as her facial expression in the end seems to portray some guilt & doubt?!

Either way, when Kurt Russel’s team arrive with the chopper at the space-ship dig sight, we see none of the 2 tracked snow vehicles which were left there at the end of the prequel and she could not have driven away using both of them!
So what happened to them?!

Also at the end of the 1982 film Kurt Russel and the black guy are left at the destroyed base waiting to see what happens. So we never know if any of the 2 or both of them had been possessed by the monster.

I’m pretty sure there will be another film based on this story, as there is plenty of room left & elements to be used.

So what do you guys think about all this and what other plot holes and interesting details did you spot on these 2 films?

the film bounces around way too much and a second watch is recommended; everything fell into place.
great acting, great story. high recommendation for any cold war/spy fan.

Amazing film. It's like watching a period piece on the Rust Belt that isn't a period piece, because it was the real deal at the time. There's also a very interesting death scene involving a spray booth. Pretty dark stuff for Richard Pryor, and one of his best roles. If that isn't enough you've got a good dose of Harvey Keitel and Yaphet Kotto at the top of thier game, playing some real tough, real gritty dudes.

Yeah, Blue Collar isn't too bad, and it certainly has some necessary social commentary going for it. That said, even, I'm not a huge fan of the film regardless of the great cast and my love for Paul Schrader. I found 3 sealed copies at a local DVD place a few years back. Opened one, gave one to a friend, and sold the other. I sold my open copy a year or so back for a pretty decent price. It's amazing how much Anchor Bay OOP stuff goes for sometimes.

Saw Gun Frontier. Daniel Craig was fine but Harrison Ford delivered the same performance he has done for the last 20 years :? . Clearly coasting through this one.

The aliens were the same as in ID4, Super 8, War of the Worlds and the mutant in Totall Recall.
Image
Like the critics say, there's nothing new in this movie.
Image
It was watchable but there was pretty much no story.

Watched The Thing 2011 Prequel.

EDIT:- Additions. Watched Drive and its far from the best film of 2011, as Empire put it. Going 'Joe Pesci' with a fork doesn't automatically give a movie a 100% rating. I prefer the original 'The Driver' which I own and I enjoyed 50 Cent's Setup MOAR.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was ok. Spot John le Carre himself as a guest in the Christmas Party.

Wanted to see The InterruptersImage
Glad I did.
Very moving documentary.

An Interrupter got shot when he attempted a mediation:
"They shot me when I turned around. One bullet in my ankle and one in my back. They opened up my stomach."
Tio (head Interrupter): "When you got shot, there were 16 shootings in 6 hours."

Just watched Hannibal on the Xbox 360/Zune video area.

BTW, there are a handful of movies to rent for 100 Microsoft Points this week via the Zune Marketplace. You can download them at that price and take up to 14 days to actually watch them when you're ready. Just throwing that out there.

Gah! John Hurt? I'll have to watch this!

I recently watched the Alec Guinness miniseries of the novel, which was pretty damn good, except for the "KARATE CHOP OF INSTANT DEATH" bit.

Movies that should be in my playlist:
Boyz n the Hood
Do The Right Thing
Treasure Island (w/ Charlton Heston)
Zulu
et c.

I just finished this piece of shit dystopian fisticuffs flick from 1996 called Mortal Challenge.
Its as bad as you think, but its got lots of titties in it. And, perhaps, some of the worst end credits music ever.

Watched Raimi's Drag Me To Hell. Nothing particularly noteworthy, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Not enough movies have corpses vomiting maggots in pretty actresses' mouths. I'm serious here.

Nothing particularly noteworthy indeed. It was a shame. I was hoping for Excellence, but I guess you need Bruce Campbell for that.

Round up:

Let the Bullets Fly - Good directing & acting. A bit overlong, a bit complex, but often very funny. 6/10

Lost in Beijing - Very good slice of life pic where you just know things won't end well. A tiny bit drawn out, but solidly directed nonetheless, with enough nudity and rape to warrant a banning in China, which is a hallmark of any good movie. 7/10

I watched Kanashimi no Belladonna the other night. Uneven but so much to love about this: the watercolor animation, much of the music, the beautiful character art. I wish more animation was made like this. Unfortunately it also was steeped in very dated 60s/70s psychadelia, and the one-note nature of the sexual imagery got old after awhile. I found myself enjoying more the rare non-erotic parts simply because it was so insistent everywhere else. Also, the retrograde sexual revolution/martyr message toward the end was silly.

Also watched Tenshi no Tamago again. So deep. My favorite work of animation, Japanese or otherwise...
