A separate board for coin chains seemed a bit unnecessary to me, yeah. If you wanted to get a high chain for it you could skip all the gem heads and use a bunch of bombs to make it easier, which of course isn't how you'd play normally. Including the max chain for each run could be kinda neat, but unfortunately the game doesn't show it unless you clear. Anyway...

Image

Zil - 2,887,800 - ALL - Tavia - MAME

Resource loss went like:
bomb on 2-2 boss since I destroyed the second set of arms too quickly.
death on 2-4 boss pattern (the one after it's feet are shot off). stupid stupid stupid, but I was nervous nervous nervous.
death to 2-5 boss red turret ball thingies. didn't misdirect properly
bomb 2-6 boss opener. (it's scary)
two bombs to 2-7 stage opener, then grabbed the one from the crystal and used it immediately. I had lost all confidence at this point.
could have theoretically suicided to clear with 2 bombs instead of 1 life for another 100k, but didn't want to risk it.

Whoever this guy is his 2nd loop superplay is like no other I have ever seen. Forget Mushi, Dodonpachi, and Ketsui. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c0-maviTJU

Oh right, now that the tourney thing is over I ought to post this modest improvement. I meant to go for 3 million but I'm lazy and weak. I'll probably leave the game alone for a while now. For real this time.

Score from Solo Shmup League:
Battletoad - 812,300 - 1-6 - Morrigan - DC

And from today:
Battletoad - 1,087,100 - 1-7 - Marion - DC

Switched back to Marion after I realized once again how great her weapons are. Her melee attack isn't much weaker as Morrigan's, but she can use it way more often. Also Morrigan's charge shot and bomb are kind of stupid, so I finally realized I'd better go on with someone else.

Just some more practice and I might finish this 1-ALL after all!

Zil - 3,002,500 - ALL - Tavia - MAME

I only collected three bomb bonus during the game, then got one from the leftover bomb at the end. I'm pretty sure my previous score collected five bomb bonuses, so that's pretty cool that I beat it anyway. Notably this time I milked the final boss.

-

Image

Zil - 1,525,200 - 2-3 - Marion - MAME

I just did a run with Marion to see if I could take the top score, but it seems that would take at least a bit of planning. I think I used three bombs to the pots in 1-6.
-

Image
Zil - 1,308,000 - 2-2 - Hei Cob - MAME

Quite a few bombs unused. Could maybe have gotten to 2-3.

Zil - 3,173,300 - ALL - Tavia - MAME

Yes, finally beat Azinth's score!

blackoak - 1,071,900 - 2-1 - Valpiro - PCB

woohoo, christmas clear! Put a bit more effort into this than the other Psikyo games I've looped, but in the end I wouldn't say its too much harder. Very easy last boss, but a couple 1-5 and 1-6 boss attacks are still very hard for me. The 3-2-1 spinning pods can be surprisingly deadly too.

Zil - 1,727,400 - 2-5 - Aine - ShmupMAME 4.2

I guess I'm going to learn Aine. There are number of things I like about him. I might even end up focusing on him over Tavia.

yeah I should be able to clear this. I'd never thought I'd make it this far, like, one year ago.
I used to think reliably getting past the third stage was impossible. >.<

EDIT:

ghhh like two more shots and it would have been a clear :X

EDIT2:

endoKarb - 1,046,400 - 2-1 - Tavia - MAME

Aaaaaand, it's done. 8)

Damn, such a thrill. It all came together pretty quickly this time around. I'll try more characters in the future, but for now - Dragon Blaze.

I can find no trace of roms for differing regions. If you point me to them, I'd gladly check them out.

In any case, having studied Godhand's run very closely, I've never noticed even the slightest difference between the game he plays and the one I play, and due to the nature of this game, I think any differences would be quite obvious.

I'd guess the person you're quoting was either referring to some port (like DC or PS2 versions) or was just mistaken.

I'm not seeing any differences either. My scores are for the Jap version anyway.

good to hear that from zil himself, really.

i do have one request: please note if you used the international or the japan setting, or the us or japan version of the dc port, if you can help it. even if trap were to sit down and analyze every single game ever, this is something i'd prefer to have in all threads, just in case...

regional differences, player side differences, mame differences... all synonyms for bullshit.

Oh, it's a setting. Well everything I've ever done with the game has been on International Ver B.

I'd have never thought it would take me so long to clear with another character. Tavia op.

    endoKarb - 1,116,900 - 2-1 - Marion - MAME (Japan)

no pic 'cause I'm lazy

bonus score:

    endoKarb - 811,400 - 1-7 - Hei-Cob - MAME (Japan)

no kingdom of fat for me yet

EDIT:

random run with Tavia to see if I still remember how to play her.

    endoKarb - 1,065,100 - 2-1 - Tavia - MAME (Japan)

No idea what I was doing. Tried to used the same trick I use on marion and failed, cleared anyway. Tavia too stronk.

Zil - 1,721,700 - Alucard - ShmupMAME 4.2 (International ver.B)

I took a break from Hei-Cob and did a random Alucard run. There is a beauty to his charge attack. I think I'll try to 2-all with him next (after Hei-Cob). May as well do everyone at some point. Then I'll really try for NMNB with Aine. (And fuck Dragon Blaze.)

Nice!

Do you record .inp files, by any chance? I'd love to see some of your runs!

They never work for me so I don't usually bother. I do try to stream the game on twitch from time to time though.

Here's an old one that I managed to record - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZz2cGoANv8

Woah, I had no idea you could NMNB so far into the second loop. Amazing run :!:

.inp recording was giving me all sort of troubles too. What I did was, I moved the record.bat and the playback.bat you can find in WoflMAME in the ShmupMAME folder, and started using those to record/playback.
Never had any issue since.

I guess I'll try and catch your stream in the future, I really wanna see your Hei-Cob skills in action :D

EDIT:

Slight Hei-Cob improvement:

endoKarb - 929.700 - 1-7 - Hei-Cob - MAME (jp)

last score from me for a while
