I just had another go and finished the game with 11.3bil - only 1bil end bonus again.

I got all secrets in every stage, used 3-4 shields throughout the entire run and lost 1 life total (at the 6th boss, the one before the final enemy with the core). I then finished the game without losing a life or using a shield, 4 ships and 2 shields in stock. I don't think any of the bosses timed out, unless I'm totally missing something they all died by my shooting. And it's not possible to kill them any faster than I already do, I'm pretty much just hitting them all the time with the missiles until they die - plus the amount of time I spend on killing pods/triggering secrets.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, maybe it's the death at the 6th boss? Does it decrease the final bonus so much more than if I died on the final boss? Battletoad died at the final boss, used a lot more shields than I did and didn't get all the secrets, but his end bonus was 750mio higher than mine. How does this work? If we knew one could try to find a way exploiting the bonus system (like in ESPGaluda, where sometimes dying once in the end is to be preferred because the bonus for remaining crystals is higher than the one for 1 spare life).

Not quite right, I died only on the stage 4 boss in my best run! Besides I also think this is very weird.
From roughly watching the score development in my video I also came to the conclusion that picking up shields with full stock is not really worth it. If you have 5 shields left after each level, well great, but otherwise through the stages they don't have a huge influence on the score.

Just finished a pretty much perfect run (for my standards).

I got all secrets in every stage, every tech bonus and no-missed the game. The end bonus was 2 billion. I'm through with original mode.
The only thing that could be improved are some combos (I never got past 147x) and I could have avoided using 3 or 4 shields at the last two bosses.

Congrats, you pretty much owned it!
I also never had really consistent combos in Original, it is a little bit luck dependent because only certain events trigger the devils.

Almost first credit in a while (directly after a mediocre run in Maniac and two quick restarts in Original), just to be played for fun/diversion...
As usual, I got all Tech Bonusses and most (not sure if all) secrets, but this became my first No Miss ever. I also tried a few new strategies after analyzing my replay and improved the boss times in stage 5 and 6 (if that even affects score at all). Still used plenty of shields, but to me it's worth it to avoid too much frustration with dangerous dodges and to gain higher combos by destroying more enemies while invulnerable.

I think I'm definitively done with this.

Great score, congrats! So finally one more person has seen and beaten the true last boss... Did you like it?

I've only fought him two or three times, great fun even though I did it only by reaction (too few times to actually learn the patterns) and with quite some luck.

It was just reaction stuff for me, but as i had a good 3 lives going into it i was sorted I thought his patterns were fairly easy for a TLB but it was so cool as i was not expecting him to appear.
