Although I did both loops at slightly over 1mil, the only exact score I still have is this last stage failure:-

R TYPE pcb default
DEL - 956,500 - ST14

My Pleasure MJR! I'm sure you can do it. The WR is something over 2mil though, so there's a lot of final Boss squeezing to do on both loops

I did not realize that the original poster should keep up the actual highscoretables. My sincerest apologies!

I will keep this table up here now if you still are interested.
As I said before entries for any platform are welcome
:)

Well then MJR I might give you some work to do. ;)

370'300 / Level 6 / Mame

In comparison to your scores it's really small.
But maybe with my score I'll get some other non-hardcore R-typers to come out.

Everyone's welcome!

I think I might have a go at c64 / pcengine entries; just for the fun of it. would be nice to have a 'completist' high score table.. 8)

Hey MJR,
why don't you show the highscores in this Form?:
Code:
#  Name    Score    Stage  Ver

1. DEL     956'500   14    PCB
2. MJR     666'700   12    PCB
3. yojo!   505'600   11    PSX
4. Edge    370'300   06    Mame
5.

Thought with just 4 people posting scores one table would be enough, since the PSX version isn't too different from the Original (or maybe it is?).
This is just an idea, so don't be offended by my opinion.
If you don't like it just go on the way you did before, otherwise hit the quote button on my post and copy this form. ;)

I'm not sure if MJR is still updating this thread, but in case you are:

Bydobasher 789800 ALL MAME

It was a SLC -- my first! :) -- so that's why the score isn't higher, although I don't really play this game with an eye towards score in any case.

I'll have to see if I can do it again tomorrow....

Actually, the WR uses checkpoint exploits. Players with scores at or close to the WR exploit either the stage 2-6 checkpoint (long line of walker drones, then containers, suiciding on the very last container to restart) or the 2-7 checkpoint (long snaking line of drones, then missile walkers, then milking the falling rubbish from the boss, suiciding before timeout to restart).

Yeah, I'm not interested in doing any of that. I'll finish both loops a few more times and then I was thinking of upping the difficulty to Hard, which doesn't seem too horrendously different. I've beaten the first loop before -- it wasn't even a SLC -- and although I haven't looked at it, I'm guessing the second loop is doable if you hang on to all your stuff. I'm concerned about all the checkpoints in Hard loop 1 though; I'd like to think that all those checkpoints are surmountable, since that's one of the things I appreciate most about Normal loop 1. However, I'm really not sure about some of them -- in particular, my strategy for stage 7 will have to be modified, since Bugs now have the ability to fire. When that's all said and done, perhaps I'll come back to what you and I talked about on the old forums -- beating Normal loop 1 without a Force Device!

Heh, I remember that. ^_^
I think I misplaced the MAME input file I made of me getting to stage 5 or 6 without the Force Device, otherwise I might give it a go again. It's on a CD somewhere...

(Been a while since I've attempted an R-Type game with No Force, last time was with Delta, to get the special note in the Notes list...)

Over a year ago when I sat down with this game for a week and played it a ton, I used to use the 2-7 checkpoint, but then I realized that it's better to use the 1-7 checkpoint because there's just a lot more to deal with on 2-7. This is a slight (but better) tradeoff though, since if you plan on going for the highest score possible, you'll be leaving 1-7 with no lives left and you'll have to play the rest of the game without any extras. This isn't much of a problem if you know what you're doing though.

as I recall, the x-6 checkpoint is the last one before the boss, so you can suicide on the wall after killing the last block.

Also, you can easily squeeze points out of the x-2 boss by killing it during the last pass of the snake. each segment is 200 points, and they add up pretty quickly. not as much as the other checkpoints, but it definitely makes a difference. there's minor milking opportunities on x-3 i think, as well. apart from that, there' s not much in the way of point milking besides the stage 6 and 7 checkpoints. P

I was able to better my score just a bit - 777'300 stage 13

i dont know if I could do those milking tips on loop 2; last stage excluded, I find myself pretty quickly finished if I lose my satellite(s)

Sly Cherry Chunks - 568,900 - ST12 [PSX]

I got to the second loop on one life - which is a major achievement for me. Must try harder though.

I reckon the PSX runs this game slower than MAME but I couldn't be certain. Any thoughts? I'm playing the PAL version.

In PAL maybe... (50fps) but not in NTSC mode. I played the PSX rev in NTSC(60fps) for about 10 months every day (before switching to truxton) and I remember one day switching to MAME and felt like I was playing slow mo.
According to MAME the pcb runs at 55fps, which is a little bit faster than the PAL version.

I got the japanese psx version and it is faster than PCB, or mame.. it has all to do with the frame rate, as the board has something like 57fps.. it is enough to warrant that in the 6+fps psx version fighting against bydo is more difficult than in the arcade version.

I also noticed that it that bydo dies usually after 2 openings when I play my arcade version, where in the psx version it seems to take quite a bit more punishment, at least 3 openings and full charged beam has to be added into the mix before it blows up. interesting.

Thanks. I know I can do a lot better though. But Gradius still takes most of my time and love. R-type series is right there as a second favorite though :)

Nice 1 tviks!

I tried R-type again a few weeks ago and found myself to be horribly rusty on ST6. I forgot the method I used to use on the ST6 final block attack? & I was unable to get Ben Shinobi's method to work :?
Then again, my score is 19 years old  .

I think all you need to do in ST6 is just to shoot the orb into the nest; accompanied with one full beam, then just fire at it whenever it opens. It should blast off on 4th opening.

I get killed constantly on the stage13 boss (loop 2 level 5); it's just too fast.
