Well, time to start the board with a minor update of my own.

LGB - 672590 - Stage 3 (Boss) - JAPAN REV

Got to the 3rd boss yesterday. With a little more pratice, I could easily defeat him; I took 3 rounds of bullet before I bit my tongue somewhere on round 4, and he got me. That was on my first try, surprisingly.

EDIT: Extremely minor improvement... LGB - 698000 - Stage 3

The second boss is a pain, but I have ideas now.

There is a hidden 1up bonus sometimes at the start of the third stage, but I don't know how to trigger it besides shooting the item boxes with missiles. I didn't die before I got it; unfortunately I've only seen it on one playthrough.

I also got one of those flashy purple P icons worth a whole lot of points when you're powered up.

So far my highest score is 1,071,860 at the third boss, but I don't want it added because I did a savestate at the second boss, did something stupid that caused me to die, then reloaded and no-missed the boss. Even so...I also want to learn the third boss pattern before I put in a score.

bsidwell - 879,590 - Stage 3 - US version

Ha! First place is mine! (I'm sure that won't last very long.)
BTW, how do you select the Japanese version? Dipswitch?

Yes. If in MAME, look for "6 Button - US version" (the order may be switched around. I'll try to go find the setting for real boards; I've never really bothered to check)

You're in!

SOMEHOW on one play I managed to get a safe spot at the right side of the screen at the third boss during savestate practice yesterday...but I couldn't do it again, the thing just hit me after that. Not sure what's going on.

Approached (thought I'd beaten, but no) my old non-enterable score today with another invalid score. Again with the purple P icon - breaking it scared the crap outta me, I thought I was dead.

For some reason, during my best play of the session, I died at the third boss a few times but I just couldn't kill him. I think I must've hit him with nine bombs. I guess I panicked and used the wrong bomb type (the dissipating ring one) a few times, though.

Thankfully, the second boss is much easier now, at least.

Interesting how the game would speed up the better you did, kind of made me try to hold off on collecting too many power ups *_*

We were all using the US version, including iostiogic. I was the only one who submitted a JP version score, as well.

So does this mean no one else is going to play proto-Shienryu style? Aw shucks. Well, I'm not either (YET).

US Version: LGB - 1.072.270 - Stage 4 (Boss)

You will have to do better than that to reach Grand Master Necronopticous, young grasshopper

Edit: I think mame lies to me. Do you really get an extend at 1 million?

We discovered some cool scoring and survival strategies in Daioh last week. I thought I'd post this, since you guys were mentioning having trouble with the stage 3 boss earlier. Copyright Strawberry Team.

This explains how to position for, and exploit the safe spot on the stage 3 boss. Milking him with the B-shot will increase your score a great deal.

Figure 1: Pre-positioning

Notice how I am using the bullets from these ships, just before the boss, to position myself as close to the middle of the screen as possible. I had max speed, so this was the best I could do, luckily, I was positioned well enough, but only just barely.

Figure 2 & 3: In the safe spot

As you can see, the primary patterns cannot hit me in this position.

Figure 4: Getting into position for barrage dodge

The arms started flailing, so I immediately move up a little bit, to give myself room to move down for the barrage.

Figure 5: Dodging the barrage

He fires the barrage, and I tap back down into the original safe spot, as the bullets swarm around my ship, missing.

And repeat! Use the B-shot all the while.

The third boss is actually really easy (stage 2 boss is harder), as long as you don't start fidgeting and run into something on mistake. I just use bombs because I don't feel like dealing with him. All you need to do is stay at the bottom and move a couple of pixels every now and then.

Also, read my above edit.

The extend scores are poorly explained on the title screen. What it is trying to say is that you get an extend at 500,000, and then every 1,000,000 after that you get another extend. Hence, extend 2 is actually at 1,500,000.

B-bomb his ass, unless you died a bunch before him and your rank is low. You might be able to get by creeping left or right on most of his patterns, then.

Good luck on stage 5, though. It's just shy of impossible.

Which weapon are you guys using throughout the stages? From what I've seen, missiles gives you the most points per kill, while lightning gives you the least.

The exact opposite. Lightning is used to milk enemies. Tear through stage 1 with just the lightning and then do the same with the missiles, you'll see results.

Holy crap, you're right, there's a huge score difference. Nevermind then.

(That explains my crappy scores...)

The problem with the lightning is its weakness. Missiles wreck things severely. Personally I switch between the two constantly. I'm tempted to just disable the wide shot button and the missile bomb button, though there might be a time when I'll need 'em.

Missiles are very nice against the second stage boss. Stay in the blind spots of each shot in the first phase, then just save yourself a headache and B-Bomb the brain-looking thing.

LGB is right. It appears that points are awarded rapidly whenever your attacks are in contact with the enemy. Obviously, the B-shot is going to give you the most lucrative results since it inherently is designed to linger on enemies until they're dead. The game gets significantly harder when you start using the B-shot exclusively, since large enemies are on the screen, firing, much longer, but you're rewarded for it, if you can handle it.

Is it better to use the B-shot instead of the C-shot on the second boss, then?

Yes, of course. I use the B-shot every time on those three heads. You can make a lot of score by milking the brain, too, but it's extremely hard to deal with that guy for a long time, so I don't risk it. I take that jerk out with a barrage of C-shot and a B-bomb to the face.

All it takes is a well placed B-bomb. No shooting required.

Then again, that means no pointmilking though.
