Flying Shark/Sky Shark/Hishozame [ARC]

Post by lgb »

This is the thread for the arcade version of Flying Shark.

RULES:
Difficulty = Normal
Bonus Life = 50K, then every 150K
Lives = 3

NAME - SCORE - AREA/STAGE - 6-LETTER NAME - PLATFORM - AUTOFIRE/DELAY

FYI, there are 5 "stages". "6-LETTER NAME" is the name you put in on the high-score screen. "AUTOFIRE/DELAY" is posted as "ON/4" or somesuch; this relates to whether you used autofire and what delay rate you used, note that the delay rate probably won't be needed for any ports either.

Just for the record (and I've mentioned it before), the western arcade Flying Shark record is by an old friend of mine UBN, who scored over 12mil and 24 loops in Finsbury Park arcade in 1988. Maybe it was 1989 :roll: , but that doesn't matter. It was one of those all-day credits.
lgb - Its not for score submission, as there's no pic and no exact score. Just thought I'd mention it as its such a mad achievement.
I remember the game slowing down to slo-mo pace at the end of each loop, due to the amount of bullets trying to come down the screen from the large wave of enemies after the Last Boss.

Not a record to go for :lol: .

Aquas - 453,560 - 85 - LUKE - MAME (World) - Flying Shark - OFF

Just made a little progress tonight. I got a floating 1up somewhere in 3rd stage? that was curious. This game came out a year after I was born!

Sorry, I can't say what area I reached as I have no photo of this score. I'll pull out my Sky Shark PCB (not the one I scored on) and try to break it soon along with a picture and area and so on.

I think I just reached the large plane on 2-1 (stage 2 second loop). I'll go for a two loop run this time as I did once as a kid.

My 6-letter name is JORGEN for this game.

Edit: No autofire was used. Is this even an advantage in this game? :D

Autofire seems to be more useful for large enemies, instead of waves of planes and tanks.

Aquas - 685,450 - 127 - LUKE - MAME - Flying Shark - OFF

I have a story that accompanies this score. I was playing the game and talking to some people on Skype and started to add my own commentary to my run. I started dying though and you know when you're about to swear but you don't want to swear but a swear or something else comes out, well, I started off yelling "Fucking Sharko!" a couple times untill I started referring to the pilot as 'Sharko'. I practiced the last areas or so by credit feeding a bunch, fought the "last boss" till I took him out. Then started a new game and managed to make it to stage 4 with all my lives, so I was like holy crap! Through the run I would occasionally give Sharko some words of encouragement "This parts hard but I know you can do it, Sharko!" and "If you make it through this alive, I'll give you some homemade potato chips!" I was being silly and explained to my friends that Sharko's favorite food is potato chips.

But then I started dying a bunch and I got worried, but managed to make it to the "last boss" enemy and spent all but one of my remaining lives fighting him. During the battle I was really nervous and tense because I had never gotten past Area 85, so I was in the final part of the game in practically new territory, aside from credit feeding it a little bit just previously. I started mashing the shot button way too hard on my HRAP and noticed this and tried to calm myself, but I could only calm myself after I had died. I figured out the proper bomb usage for that part though, just barely, and made it to the last landing-way. "Yeah! Sharko!"

So there you have it. The legend of Sharko.

Chi_Ryu - 603,270 - 96 - SSNAPE - 飛翔鮫 (PCB) - OFF

Stupid. I died after the final bomber, usually that'd be me home and dry, but instead it meant respawning on the bomber with a peashooter. I've looped this before, so must give this a better crack at the weekend (gave me a good excuse to dust off the PCB though :D).

Better run this time (but did crap on stage 2-2) - not too bad a score for the stage I got to though (but bombed a bunch of times on the final bomber as I was tired):

I think this has become one of my favorite games and I don't even need to obsessively play it to say that :roll: Yes, go for the million! I'd love to play this game on a cab ;_;.

Whee! Amazing how this game can let you come back sometimes after dying. Harder to do in the 2nd loop, though. :D

Ed Oscuro - 323,320 - 50 - EAH - MAME Plus! - Flying Shark - ON (setting 6, same as slow tapping)

Almost recovered three times and nearly got to the end of that stage, wouldn't have helped much since I was using bombs. Past this point is all new stuff for me.

Good ot see you finally got your hands on it Marc! I'll chuck this back in the cab when I'm back in the UK and give it a bash... I've broken a mill in the past, but not whilst recording highscores. Your score gives me something to look forward to and to aim towards! I'd quite like to get to the third loop - that I *know* I've never done...
