With that mindset I'd be tempted to give Graceful Explosion Machine a try - I'm not by any means suggesting to bypass a classic like Blazing Star in favour of GEM but I might be inclined to defer playing it until I'm in a "less casual" mood.

All shmups are fun if you just blow stuff up and dodge. Blazing Star is no exception.

The scoring system in Blazing Star is really simple (but a little opaque), so I'd say it fits your needs well.
Scoring high in the game basically involves killing things for medals and not letting any of them off the screen. The penalty for dropping a medal isn't even too bad, and it's easy to adjust your game to push for more medals at key locations such as boss fights. To me it feels like a natural part of just blowing stuff up, and going for the medals does make the game a lot more fun, but it's really fine to ignore it if that's what you want.
More than anything, Blazing Star is about survival. You don't even get extends or bomb.

Graphics. So awesome that they are pre PS1. How I wish I had a Nintendo Switch.

Now I need to start reading the guides to figure out this scoring system...

I checked that link:
About the genre;First Person? I thought it's shooter.

Blazing Star is not pre-PS1. It came out in 1998. PS1 is from 94/95.

What should be done, then?

Uh... Hm. For example, understand that a Blazing Star remake has the slimmest chance of happening and be satisfied with the port, and keep looking for those other things in new games/media.

Or maybe go on a quest to make a fan remake yourself. And prepare to get a DMCA takedown notice once all the hard work is done. Or better yet, rebrand it as a completely original property with an original story.

Stop humouring him.

Sorry for my misunderstanding. Now I say the graphics looks like PS1 but only for Neo-Geo. More like Midway Wolf Unit Graphics.

As an avid Pulstar fan I've tried again and again to get into it but every time I get so annoyed by that retarded announcer that the best I can do is credit-feed to the fourth or so level and then just give up. What a stupid design choice.

I somewhat fail to see what Pulstar and Blazing Star have in common, or how Blazing Star is a sequel to Pulstar, other than having "star" in the title, featuring similar gameplay, and having the protagonist of Pulstar as a playable character in Blazing Star.

I went out and bought this last week and I really like it. I'm actually playing it more than other SNK games I've been trying out lately. I'm not exactly sure how good I'm doing but I've made it to level 3 a couple times and I think my high score is around a little over a million.

I've had this game for years but just started playing it seriously. The "donuts" will never go away.

How are there humans who prefer these classic games to be framed with ugly front-ends and filter options?
It's like a gorgeous chick who's dressed hideously.
Why can't the game just load up, chunky as hell and OG like a straight up ROM?

I will forever stick with the originals, or the roms, rather than deal with this kind of stuff.

Are you joking? MAME is much more clunky when it comes to screen settings. I had a heck of a time trying to get some games like Metal Slug to show at the correct aspect ratio in MAME. Most of the Arcade Archives games can be played with straight up scanlines or no filtering at all. Rygar is unfiltered without scanlines and looks better than the Wii version with scanlines. Then again, I only played the PS4 Arcade Archives, so I don't know if something is different with the Switch versions.

I'm just bummed out that after buying g so many AA titles, Switch gets this, Shock Troopers and Waku Waku 7 right off the bat. They'd best make it to PS4.
