Don't hate on easy shmups

Post by szycag »

You need to cut that out trying to act like you're hard and if you don't have to dedicate two months to a game it's not any good!

 STOP HATIN

I was playing Lords of Thunder on Sega CD just now. Louis was in IRC tellin me yeah dude you'll be disappointed because it's easy. Get the Duo version. Well you know what, this is the most fun I've had with a shmup in a long time. I love the swinging ball and chains, going nuts collecting gems, and getting up close and swiping at the guys. It's AWESOME. If it's too easy for you, then don't use the shop, simple!

So for this thread I'm gonna make a master list of easy games that still kick ass. Because the games are called shoot-em-ups not dodge-bullet-ups! Remember I said easy games that kick ass, so I don't want to hear you say "D-Force" or something.

____________

Lords of Thunder (Sega CD)
GunNac (NES)
Over Horizon (NES)
Thunderforce 3 (Genesis)
Gate of Thunder (TGCD)
Fire Barrel (Arcade)
UN Squadron / Area 88 (SNES, Arcade)

Air Zonk (TG)
Super Aleste / Space Megaforce (SNES)
MUSHA Aleste (Genesis)
Aleste GG 2 (Gamegear)
Robo Aleste (Sega CD)
Axelay (SNES)
Pop N Twinbee (SNES right?)
Biohazard Battle (Genesis)
Twin Cobra 2 (Arcade)

Harmful Park (PSX)
Coryoon (PCE)
Storm Blade (Arcade)
Cloud Master (SMS)
Blazing Lazers (PCE)
Soldier Blade (PCE)
Star Parodier (PCE)
Magical Chase (PCE)
Cotton (Arcade,TG16CD)
Elemental Master (Genesis)
Blast Wind (Arcade, Saturn)

Meh. The LOT versions aren't as different as everyone would make them out to be. They're both really easy. Good stuff, however.

I know I'm probably considered a hater, but excellent thread. I like older 16-bit style games a little on the easy side. TF3 > Gaiares.

The NES port of Dragon Spirit is easy as hell. I don't know about "still kicks ass", though... I liked it when I was a kid, but kids are dumb and have dumb opinions so it's possible I was completely wrong. Maybe I should go play it again and report back.

Harmful Park.

Also Gaia Seed, though some (out of the few who have played it, anyway) might not agree it kicks ass.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I always thought R-Type Leo was relatively easier than the other R-Types. Great music too.

Gradius Gaiden on the PSP set to easy and... *drumroll* smaller hitbox!

It´s still no monkey mode, and the Moai stage is fun, with the huge rotating Moais at the end, a cool boss rush, and if you add the double-tailgun-shot you´re pretty much covered from all sides. It made me feel like I actually have some SKILL.

That's really swell, but this thread is about games that take you 1-2 days to finish.

Also, game that takes 1 month to finish = hard

Yeah. It's not like Harmful Park, which I finished in my first play. There are 2 shmups I finished on my first play: Aleste GG and Harmful Park (Add McDonald's Treasure Land and we have the trio of games I finished on my first go)

I finished Aleste GG 2 on my second play.

And I finished Soldier Blade on my 3rd go at it.

Still consider Soldier Blade to be among my top 30 shmups ever. It's an excellent game.

Blast Wind is also very easy and excellent. I finished it on my 5th or 6th go. There is a lot of replay value if you try to play it for score though (Like Harmful Park does, though I didn't enjoy that one so much).

Compile games are usually regarded as easy. The eariler ones on MSX weren't that easy (The original Zanac is pretty hard actually), but Zanac EX / Nes , Aleste, Aleste 2, Aleste Gaiden and Gunnac are all pretty easy if you are an experienced shmupper.

I see people who have no experience in shmups to be killed very quickly on those games (And usually lasting longer in harder shmups like Strikers 1945)

I dunno.. don't confuse Mc Donald's Treasure Land, made by Treasure released only on the Mega-Drive, with McDonald Land, made by Virgin, released on NES, Amiga and Gameboy , also called "Mc Kids" in some regions.

McDonald Land indeed IS brutally difficulty, while being a very enjoyable jump'n'run game.

McDonald's Treasure Land is very, very, very easy. It usually regarded as pretty meh, and as it was released nearly at the same time that Gunstar Heroes was, it's usually considered the "Treasure game on Mega-Drive that no one remembers".

Storm Blade continues to be the only arcade shmup I've ever 1CC'd (first loop). Although it can pull a few punches in the later stages if you really don't want to use your bombs, it's still quite easy. Too bad it also still has that graphic glitch in mame.

Battle Bakraid is also beatable within just a few days if you don't mind a low score.
