Raiden DX is a remixed and improved version of Raiden II, that includes 2 new game modes, a scoring system and many scoring secrets. It is awesome. You should get it. :)

Just in time for the STGT. A reminder of my glorious victory in Dragon Blaze week.

It is an import game, as it was released in Japan only. As far as I know it'll work on a modded PS1, and perhaps with a swap disc too, but I can't speak from experience, as I play it on my JPS2.

It is a nice package though, with lots of modes, options, and unlockables - comes recommended if you can snag a copy.

Yes it is worth getting DX. Much more fun than Raiden or Raiden II.

DX is the best of the Raidens that aren't part of the Raiden Fighters trilogy, IMO.

The three game modes offer varied, differing types of play (Training is like a score attack, and is great fun to perfect to try and loop into Novice; Novice is like classic Raiden, and enjoyable for a shorter duration game; Expert is fucking hard, and always challenging even to experts of the game, especially those trying to loop it), and scoring is well-crafted to offer continual challenge during improvements.

Get DX and play it to death. Keep Project for the nostalgia.

I actually still think DX is the best of the series by a long shot.
There's a good Stuart Campbell review here:

http://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.com/raidendx.htm

If you dug Project I'd say it's well worth picking up. Incredibly deep and rewarding game.

For Rob.,

If you do go down the path of Superguns and/or full sized arcade cabinets, then by picking up the original Seibu Kaihatsu produced Raiden PCB, Raiden II PCB and/or Raiden DX PCBs, you'll be set for life... ^_~

Some shmuppers like to play their favorite Raiden and it's sequels shmup titles in the original format released for the arcades as it was intended for, via arcade Jamma PCB setup...can't go wrong with that particular setup indeed. Might set you back some smackers but well worth the time and monetary investment alone..... ^_~

PC Engine Fan X! ^_~

How does the PSX DX fair against the PCB? I have the PSX ver. and it's solid, as far as I can tell. It'd be curious if the PCB had more to offer.

IIRC the PSX version has a handful of features the original didn't, though I couldn't tell you what they were (though I'm personally always grateful for separate high score tables for different difficulty levels, which the port has).

There are some subtle scoring differences between PCB and PSX, I'll just repeat what I wrote in the DX thread:

CIT wrote:
Getting the 7th secret pyramid in Training course is also different (easier) on the PCB. You can get it automatically when you get the 6th pyramid, without pulling off the train bonus, on Playstation that is a requirement. You can also manipulate the guts bonus on the PCB by keeping the start button depressed throughout play. Japanese players jam a toothpick in there to keep it permanently down.

Basically this means it's a little bit easier to score high on the PCB.

In terms of port quality the PSX version is absolutely superb - graphics and sound are spot on!

There's also some extra content such as an unlockable boss rush mode (great fun!), new soundtracks, a ton of options, etc.

To play an import or burned game on a PS1, you can either:
* Install a mod chip
* Use a boot disk
* Use a cheat device (Gameshark, Action Replay, ect.)
* Use the swap trick

Now if you want to play one on a PS2, I think using a mod chip or swap disk are the only options. And with a PS2 swap disk you need a way of getting the disk out without pressing the eject button, typically accomplished by altering the console so it has a lid that flips open.

And of course, you could put the disk in your PC and play it on an emulator. Or just download it.

Yeah the PSX port is spot on. You don't really need the PCB unless you have a high desire to play it in an arcade cab.
