The levels are so damn long! It wouldn't be as bad if they didn't have those bits in the levels where nothing happens for a while. And the bosses just take too long to beat.

I still enjoy it though, and playing through with my own soundtracks is mighty fun.
A lot of those dead spots are good for charging up the missiles using the organic mode. When several enemies start encroaching, it's good to let the missiles loose so they can mop up the ones you leave behind.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Microsoft updated Xbox 360 backwards compatibility today and Xyanide didn't make it on the list. :(
jp wrote:I may run out and buy it despite it not being backwards compatible. Especially since I've been assured people are working on it. :D
Did you hear they're working on Xyanide specifically, or is that just wishful thinking from the publisher?

I got a PM telling me "they" were looking into BC. *shrugs*

So... it very well could be a dream of the developer's or something. Dunno.

@JP, I thought you kept your XBOX?

I REALLY don't understand WHY they haven't gotten JSRF or Panzer Dragoon Orta working on the 360 yet, not to mention Sega GT 2002.

Oh well, at least they have Serious Sam up. :D

Because Microsoft's backcompat team is woefully understaffed, allegedly.

Anyone who wants to see top-tier Xbox shooters like Xyanide and Panzer Dragoon Orta on Xbox 360, should send a polite email to [email protected] asking specifically for those titles.

Good news if you live in Europe. I've imported this (from vg+) and the US version works fine on a PAL Xbox. I can't see it ever getting released in Europe so go for it. Enjoying it so far.

I just got this game and i am thoroughly enjoying it! :) once you get the hang of the control scheme it really becomes second nature.

i wonder why they didnt make it 480p though....?
seems like a huge oversight to make something with visuals like this and not have it 480p compatible at least.

i hear that there is a "patch" of sorts that can be performed on the xbox to actually make this game run in progressive mode, and it runs fine supposedly.. so i wonder.. why leave this function out of the game?

In the default.xbe replace:

8B 57 28 50 8B 47 30 50 8B 47 2C 51 8B 4F 04 52

with:

50 8B 47 30 50 8B 47 2C 51 8B 4F 04 90 6A 00 90

I haven't tried it yet, but I will.

EDIT:
it works

Then why the FOOK don't they hire more people?! Cripes, I went to this year's GDC, and I'm sure that plenty of the attendents there have the skills. I'd be working for Microsoft if I did.

run an ftp server like evox on your xbox. put in xyanide. browse the D drive. you will see the default.xbe.

OK, the hex replacement i posted above works. At least my tv is claiming it is receiving a 720*480(60p) signal instead of a 720*480(60i). On first inspection it looks better.

thanks for the tip Atomic.

OK, I made a 480P patch for the default.xbe of xyanide. The patch is applied with PPF 3.0 from http://www.paradogs.com/pdx_ppf3.htm
This patch is for the default.xbe only, NOT an ISO of the game. Most people with a modded xbox play off the harddrive, so you can just FTP the patched xbe back over and overwrite the old one. This game easily fits on the E drive, so you don't need an upgraded harddrive to do this. Just a dashboard replacement like evox, avalaunch, xbmc, etc.. that will let you launch programs.

I posted it at eurasia.nu (free registration req) http://www.eurasia.nu/modules.php?name= ... patch_XBOX

I will be happy to email it, if someone wants to post it somewhere else.

Remember, buy this game! Its only $20.

so basically, just for clarification, you move the game over to the HD and then overwrite the old xbe with the new one?

that is correct. or you could copy all the files over to your pc and burn them as a DVD with UDF structures (select Make XBOX Compatible in Nero), or build an image file with Qwix.

can anyone help me in this.
using the rockets doenst seem to help much on bosses.
it only shoots one rocket and this is very weak.
in the intro movie there is some green targeting thing within the red rocket target when it locks on but this doenst appear when i use the rocket lock.

first stage mid boss ship: how to destroy that ship? i barelly manage to shoot down all the canons and have very little time to concentrate on the core. how to drain its life faster?

it somehow feels that something is missing, bosses takes ages to shot down, did i miss something?

Sounds like you're not powering up enough. For bosses, mid-bosses, and large enemies, only use the mechanical rockets. Organic rockets and shots do virtually nothing. Concerning the first stage carrier, it is indeed possible. You have to be quick, however. Learn how long it takes for your rockets to be released, hit, and reload. You can actually fire off salvos quite quickly.

lets make sure, you hold the left trigger and move it over the target.
how do you know if its charged full?

Read the manual.

"Primary fire will cease the moment the left trigger is pulled and sights will be displayed on screen and the rockets will immediately start loading. When the sights are placed on a target using the right stick, it will indicate it has locked on to the target. Releasing the left trigger will fire the number of missiles aimed at the target. The number of missiles, their loading speed and their power depends on the mutation level of the craft. The organic mutation path has seeking missiles that do not require a lock, in which case they will seek out targets independently (they can only auto target enemies at close range (glow)"

So, to summarise: power up your mechanical path a little so that by the time you reach the mid boss you are firing 2 rockets at a decent rate. The organic rockets are useless against the bosses. You know the mechanical rockets have locked on because the sight flashes briefly (or something, I can't remember off the top of my head, but it's pretty obvious and happens quickly).

There some keen strategy at work here. Do you power up the mechanical path to finish off the bosses more quickly, or do you power up the organic path to make progress through the game more easy since most of the main level enemies are killed most easily with the organic weapons. Personally I'm veering towards the organic path with a smattering of mechanical to help out.

Are there anymore stage replays of this game on the net?

Wow, I got bad X2 flashbacks off of that. Fighting only one type of enemy at any one time, urgh. And nine and a half minutes for one stage? There were enough moments with no action on the screen to clip at least two minutes off.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Well, it still looks a helluva lot better then R-Type Final, IMO.

Honestly, you really can't compare the pacing in Xyanide to traditional shooters. Just watching the game makes it seem dull and boring. It actually changes quite a bit when you play. Kind of hard to explain... The further you go into the game, the more the action shifts from single-plane firing to lock-on targeting. Eventually, it gets to the point where you are constantly shifting between firing modes as well as both evolution paths.

how much more money for "completion" would you need? i mean its already been shown that the came simply needs a hex edit and then it can run fine in progressive mode. it seems that all they had to do is add the "switch" so to speak.
